The woman knows that her parents are in the car together, and wants to get hold of them. She dials her mum's mobile number first, then looks out the window and sees that it's dark outside. Her dad never drives in the dark, so she concludes that her mum will be driving and won't answer her phone, hangs up and dials her dad's mobile instead.
