[Doriana] As in olden days

Postby Doriana » Sat Apr 24, 2021 8:39 pm

2 is better than 0, but 0 is better than 1. What am I referring to?

I had the idea to this puzzle when I looked through the old forum a while ago and came across this similarly- worded Nimue puzzle. The situation I'm referring to is completely unrelated to this puzzle though.

I'll admit that the source puzzle has me a bit boggled, but I'll give this one a go.

Are games relevant? Sports? Academics? Other tests? Do the numbers refer to scores? Something(s) intangible? Tangible things? Do they refer to people? Household items? Workplace items? Punishments? Medical issues? Is 0 always better than 1? Is it better than 1 in certain situations? Is 2 always better than 0? Is 2 only better than 0 in certain situations? Is 2 better than 1? Is 1 better than 2?

I'll admit that the source puzzle has me a bit boggled, but I'll give this one a go. In that case, you can just disregard the source puzzle completely :)

Would a number greater than 2 be possible in the context of this puzzle? If so, would higher numbers be better than 2? Better than 1? Better than 0?

Is it relevant whether each number is even or odd? Do the numbers refer to a number of teams? Players? A piece of equipment used in the sport?

Is this a team-based sport? Is 0 better than 1 for a specific team? A specific player? Is it better in situations where a team/player is losing?

Are the numbers of balls/pucks/discs/etc. (something that the players throw/push/otherwise move)? of something that must be hit or aimed at (like bowling pins, archery targets, etc.)? distance units (like laps around a track, yards in football, etc.)? other players?

CLARIFICATION/BLOOPER: The situation that inspired the puzzle statement happened to me in a sports-related context, but it could also happen in non-sports contexts, so don't focus too much on the sports thing

Are the "better" numbers better for running? Throwing? Another physical activity?

Do the numbers refer to gloves? Shoes? Another piece of clothing?

So does "2" refer to having one item on each side of the body (e.g. on both feet, both hands, etc.)? and "1" refers to having on of the items on one side (one hand, one foot, etc.)?

Is 1 the worst because it's "unbalanced", whereas either 0 or 2 is "balanced"? I was thinking maybe along the lines of corrective lenses, like having them for both eyes makes you see better than if you didn't have them, but only having one eye corrected is often the worst because it skews spatial perception. Is it something along these lines?

Ding ding ding! Skipping some questions because it's time for the

********SPOILER********

I'm slightly short-sighted and I usually wear contact lenses to lacrosse practice. One time, I lost a contact lens during practice, and wearing only one contact lens completely messed up my spatial perception. I then removed the other contact lens as well, which wasn't ideal, but still preferable to wearing just one lens.

Well done, biograd, and thanks for playing, everyone!
