A very common object that was invented to help mankind should require users to only do one thing in order to use it. However in some cases a user must do two things, and this additional thing was once attributed to a famous person. However, the famous person has never been seen doing the thing with the object (except possibly by a very limited number of people). Plus, when the famous person does the thing that has been attributed to him, it actually doesn't cause anything to happen. So what's the object and why did someone attribute its use to a famous person who had nothing to do with its creation or use?

Is it usually used indoors? Yes outdoors? Maybe, but I've never seen it at home? Maybe but it isn't common at work? Much more common, depending on the location of work while travelling? It is common to find this during travel, yes
Is the famous person still alive? Yes

Do the one or two things the user must do involve: paying for something? Turning the object on? Moving the object?

Does the famous person do the additional thing, but not in conjunction with using the object? E.g. if the object requires you to wear a top hat then it might be associated with Abraham Lincoln.

Light? Also possible but not always
Speaker? Display? Motor? None of these
Power cord? In some cases, but not exactly a "cord"

Is the object an IR switch? and the one thing one has to do to use it, is just being close to it?
But when you're already sitting close to it and the light goes off, you have to make additional movements in order to trigger it again?

But when you're already sitting close to it and the light goes off, you have to make additional movements in order to trigger it again? Not this type of object, but the idea of "additional movements" is relevant

The relevant aspect of the device is that a sensor detects movement within the vicinity. Aside from this, no other details are relevant.

Several years ago one famous person talked about using automatic "touch-free" hand dryers, and he attributed a certain thing about them to another famous person. The relevant aspect of the hand dryers is that they operate by sensing that a user's hands are underneath or near the machine. In some cases, a user must do something else besides simply put his or her hands near the machine, and this "something else" is the action that was attributed to someone famous who has likely never been observed by the public using an automatic hand dryer. The action is a magic maneuver, and the person is not fictional.

The comment was about one having to wave his/her hands around in order to activate an automatic dryer, but this motion was not attributed to someone else who had been seen using one of these machines, they had been seen doing something else...
