[WiZ] Discretion is the better part of Valdez

Postby WiZ » Fri May 27, 2022 3:56 am

Why did a responsible man order his subordinates to pour oil into the sea?

True story. Caveat Earlispoilor. OAATP rules apply. Nice to see you all again.

Oil: mineral? Crude? Vegetable? Animal? Whale oil? Snake oil? Olive oil?
Edit: oops, didn't see the OAATP. Fixed.

Was the intended effect to: pollute? Calm the waves? Create an oil slick? A fire hazard? Be seen? Be misidentified as a damaged ship? Dispose of the oil? Lighten the ship?

Did they want to do something more with the oil after pouring it into the sea? Burn it?

Did they want to do something more with the oil after pouring it into the sea? no Burn it?

Sarisberie

Did it happen on [list of dates]? In the interests of not giving away too much (and the fact that this is clearly an open-ended question wearing a felt moustache), I will say early 20th century.

Jenburdoo

Did it happen in [List of Places]? In the ocean - and I think my future OAATPs will include a house rule banning lists containing large infinities.

Did they attempt to rescue people from a lifeboat or a sinking ship?

Did they "pour oil on troubled waters" to attempt to calm the waves, either actually or metaphorically?

Sundowner

Did they attempt to rescue people from a lifeboat or a sinking ship? yes

GalFisk

Is there a war no or other disaster? yes

JenBurdoo

Is a storm potentially or other weather phenomenon not 'weather' precisely, but ORT relevant?

Trebor

Was the ship in question involved in the Titanic disaster? yes (although in principle could have applied to any number of other ships)

Sarisberie

Did they "pour oil on troubled waters" to attempt to calm the waves, either actually or metaphorically? yes, very good

***** SPOILER *****

He was the captain of HMS Carpathia, the ship that received the lifeboats from the Titanic. By pouring water into the ocean, the waves were calmed and it became safer for the lifeboats to draw up alongside the ship.

Congratulations on the solution, and thank you everyone for playing!
