[JenBurdoo] Bill and Joe's Excellent Puzzlers

Postby JenBurdoo1 » Tue Mar 07, 2023 5:33 am

Soldiers pass through a liberated town, but their officers eventually realize the joyous welcome isn't as innocent as it seems. What's going on?

Approx date when this happened - [list of dates], Is the place relevant? Is this historical? Would I find it in the history books etc? Fiction? WW2, other wars, other, relevant? To be sure: DID it actually happen?

Are the people townsfolk? Are they up to nefarious things?

Edit: title relevant?

Are the soldiers British, French, German, American... etc? Is the town recently liberated, soon to be liberated, relevant? Do one or other party believe the war to be over? Was there a ceasefire? Did this town get a special mention in the history books? Were Bill and Joe actual participants in this war, or relevantly something else?
EDIT: "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" relevant?

Joyous welcome: people cheering? dancing? music? banners? flags? flowers for the soldiers? the mayor greeting them?
Do the soldiers plan to stay in this town? just pass by?
Were the joyous people locals?
Did the people in the town expect to benefit from the US soldiers' presence in a very specific way? like: did they have a large stock of smuggled tobacco and wanted to sell it to the soldiers?
Was there a mistake on the side of the US Army? Was the town already liberated a while ago and now a second unit attempted to liberate it once more?
Language relevant? Did the name of the town sound funny in English?

Were the locals pranking the soldiers? the officers? a group of locals pranking another group? soldiers pranking the officers?
Were the expressions of welcome staged?
Did the locals have something to hide? did he soldiers? the officers?
As the soldiers were just passing by: did the locals want them to stay? want them to move on the sooner the better?
As the locals did not share the view of a not so innocent joy: was there something going on the locals were not aware of?

So some soldiers are mocking some officers, correct? Er, in the light of your other questions, mockery is probably NOT the appropriate type. Blooper alert. Is the mockery understood by: the other soldiers? Oh, yes. The townspeople? Depends on whether they're paying close attention. the targeted officers? Once they realize what's going on. The other officers? Assume no others are present, or at least in range. Is the mockery done by imitating them? Relevant what language the soldiers use? The townsfolk use? Singing relevant? Language not used.

Was it: eaten by someone else? Saved? Thrown? Given away? If so, tot he officers in question? Relevantly not to them? Fed to animals? Type of fruit relevant? Was it locally grown? Is the thing the solderis do a reference to something that has happened earlier? Or a reaction? Do they pretend the fruits are something else? Such as hand granades?

Was it: eaten by someone else? Saved? Thrown? This. Given away? If so, to the officers in question? Relevantly not to them? Fed to animals? Type of fruit relevant? Assume grapes - anything juicy would do, though. Was it locally grown? Is the thing the solders do a reference to something that has happened earlier? Or a reaction? Possibly this. Exact reasoning irrelevant. Do they pretend the fruits are something else? Such as hand grenades? No, though they are using a similar skill.

Are they throwing the grapes at: each other? Other soldiers? The targeted officers? This. All officers? Other people? Animals? Buildings? Vehicles? The ground? Are they thrown with great force? Enough. Great precision? Yes. A great distance? No. Are they thrown in a manner that makes it hard to know who threw? From the point of view of the concerned officers, yes. do they splatter? Yes. Make stains? Probably. Bounce? Annoy someone? Yes. After being thrown, are they inedible to humans? Probably. Relevant how many are thrown? If so, less than 5? 10? Assume around this. 50? 100? More?

SPOILER

In the linked "Willie and Joe" cartoon by Bill Mauldin (hence the puzzle title), a convoy of American soldiers passes through a French town, whose inhabitants are passing out fruit, wine and flowers to the soldiers. Two officers in a jeep have been struck several times by what appear to be grapes and plums, which are being thrown at them by privates in the truck behind them. One says to the other, "My, sir, what an enthusiastic welcome!"
