Greta wakes up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty. On her way to the kitchen for a glass of water, she notices a door slightly ajar that she was sure was closed before she went to bed last night. She opens it more fully to discover, to her surprise, that the room inside is completely empty. She begins opening other nearby doors to the same result: emptiness. She suddenly hears a noise coming from behind another door further down the hall. She approaches it quietly, then opens the door to find all of the missing contents inside, completely destroyed and scattered about the room. What is going on?

She moved to the last room, her art room, where she surveyed the scattered remnants of her broken dreams. She breathed an eternal sigh. ... Merry Christmas, everyone!

Greta passes the advent calendar, noticing that a door for a future date appears to be open. Investigating, she finds it empty. There are other compartments that have been emptied as well. Hearing a noise in her child's room, she opens the door to find the child awake, and chocolate and wrappers strewn about the room.

Not exactly autobiographical, but drawing heavily from my experience as the father of a recovering candy thief. I remember one time when my child entered from the backyard covered head to toe in small pieces of candy. It's hard to be mad at someone when they're coated in candy cane shards.
