[GalFisk] Lies, damned lies, and statistics

Postby GalFisk » Sat Jul 24, 2021 5:23 pm

If it was actually true, I'd be in big trouble.

It = a statistic?

In trouble with the law? with your employer? with your family? with friends? financial trouble? interpersonal relationship trouble? health trouble? psychological trouble?

It = a statistic? No.

In trouble with the law? Yes. with your employer? No. with your family? Possibly, but irr. with friends? No. financial trouble? Indirectly. interpersonal relationship trouble? health trouble? psychological trouble? Assume no to the rest, for simplicity.

It = a statement? made by you? by someone you know? you have heard? or read?
Does "it" relate to you personally? to all men? to people of your nationality? profession? place of residence? eduational status? religion? age? hobbies?
Is there any chance that "it" is true? or will become true in the future?

Is "it" a statement that was made specifically about you? About a group of people that includes you?
Does the statement describe you? People with whom you identify?
Is the statement made as matter-of-fact? A prediction? An accusation? Made as a humorous one?

WAGish line of questioning: Is there some sort of scam going on? Is someone trying to sell you something? Or flatter you?

Was it a notification or message from your phone itself? E.g. "Your battery is running low" or "Your signal is weak"?
Was it produced by an app on your phone? Did it come in the form of a text? Did it have anything to do with making or receiving a call? With a voicemail?

Was it trying to tell you or remind you to do something? To stop doing something? To do something differently? Was it simply informational, with no required action on your part?

Does the app track your movement? Or some other aspect of your day (food, sleep, etc.)?
Does the message signify that someone is communicating or interacting with you?

Is a potential misunderstanding or play on words involved?

Did the app (or rather its developer) make a false assumption? e.g. that you would have the phone on your person at all times?
Did the message come from the app itself? as opposed to, say, an included third-party advertisement?
Could the same message be legitimately displayed to another user of the app, and be true, without them being in "big trouble"?

Did the app (or rather its developer) make a false assumption? Yes. e.g. that you would have the phone on your person at all times? But not this.
Did the message come from the app itself? Yes. as opposed to, say, an included third-party advertisement? So no.

Did the statement declare something about how much exercise you get? how long you sleep? how long you spend per day/week on the phone talking to people? how much of your day you spend browsing the Internet? how much energy you use to charge the phone?

Does it say something like "This phone has traveled X miles over the past Y hours", and if this were correct, it would mean that you had been driving well over the speed limit?

If that's not it, is the message about where your phone has been in relation to other phones? to wireless hot spots? to cell towers?

No to all. All these are OTRT but based on the same FA.

It seems that none of us has the correct idea of the type of app this is. Which of the following categories, if any, describes the primary purpose of this app:

Navigation/route mapping?
News?
Facilitating transactions with a specific business (e.g. banking, requesting deliveries, etc.)?
Keeping track of entered data over time (e.g. weight loss progress, pregnancy tracker)?
Information access (e.g. book reader, encyclopedia)?
Scheduling (e.g. calendar, sticky notes, alarm clock)?
Management/"phone health" (e.g. usage monitor, disk cleaning, app permission control)?
"Expert information" (helping diagnose illness, legal advice, etc.)?
Entertainment (e.g. watching movies, playing music, etc.)?
Game?

Is your driving being tracked? Is the app telling you when you are in violation, or driving on a toll road?

So it isn't a route mapping app of some kind (i.e. one that draws the route taken by the phone, during some activity)? Is it an app that lets you locate a certain kind of thing (e.g. gas stations, libraries, restaurants, etc.) near you? an app that lets you share your location with others?

Does it track the location of an inanimate object? an animal? This. a person? a vehicle? But it thinks it's doing this. another phone?
SPOILER:
We got a GPS tracker for our cat. The supplied app happily displays the location of "your car", frequently prowling a wooded area near our home.

Thanks for playing!
