So that they wouldn't come off during some kind of occurrence?
So that some other person, weaker than himself would not be able to open the jars?
In order to simulate the partial vacuum between the lid and the inside of the jar, which usually means the jar has not been opened since it was filled?

Is he trying to prevent the jars being opened by his partner? His children? A flatmate? A thief? Some manner of service monkey? Himself, sleepwalking?

Do the jars still contain their original contents? Do the specific contents matter? Is he trying to stop his food stocks depleting too quickly? Is he doing this to protect someone's health (e.g. by stopping them spooning Nutella out of the jar wantonly and gratuitously)?

Does he want them to: not be opened at all? Not be opened by his partner? Does he want to appear helpful or strong by opening them? Is he trying to prove a point? Is he gaslighting? Is the partner HAF? Are they regular jar lids? Lids of the new type which is easier to open? Edit: is he playing a prank?

Do the jars contain food?
Did he prevent his partner from eating the food?
Is the partner sleepwalking? and possibly eating during sleepwalking?
Does he want to avoid some side effect of his partner eating from the jars? like: leaving the jars open? leaving the fridge door open? leaving stains on the table? going to bed without having brushed the teeth?

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaslighting
Is something his partner said relevant? Something she did? Is he trying to win an argument? If so, with her? Someone else? A bet?

Does he expect that his partner would attempt to open the jars? but not succeed?
Does he expect she would ask for help? or just put the jar aside and take something different?
Would she? or he? at any point open any of the jars? with the help of a tool?
Did he buy a jar opener and wants to prove the need for it?

Will he, or is he hoping to, be present when his spouse tries to open the jars?
If so, is he planning to utter a specific, well, utterance, or question?
Has his spouse said something relevant about him? About herself? About men in general? About women in general?
Is this puzzle in any way "battle-of-the-sexes"-related?

Close enough.

The man had had an argument with his wife who had said he was no use to her whatsoever. He tightened all the jar lids so that she would not be able to open them and would be forced to ask him for help.

Wow, OK. I was hoping the solution wasn't essentially 'he was a jerk' but I suppose I can understand his reasoning without having to agree with it.

To be fair, she was also a jerk.
Or it could all be in good humor.
