[Sarisberie] THUNK!

Postby Sarisberie » Tue Oct 04, 2022 8:56 pm

I didn’t see him die. But I heard his head hitting the bucket.

This is my first ever OAATP (One At A Time Please) so I don't know if it will work. Could someone link to, or define, OAATP rules here as I can't find them? Thanks.

Is some instrumentation (like a drum hit or pounding a low chord on a piano) meant to evoke the image/sound of a head hitting a bucket?

Is our goal to figure out the specific piece of music?

Is this part of a symphony? Opera? Was it composed by Rossini? Tchaikovsky? Mozart? Beethoven? Wagner (ugh)? Liszt? Handel? Bizet? Puccini?

Is it also known for its use in cartoons? Is it based on the French Revolution? Another set of events known for beheadings?

Is it also known for its use in cartoons? No, might you be thinking of Rossini's William Tell Overture being used in Bugs Bunny? Is it based on the French Revolution? Another set of events known for beheadings? no

OK, you've solved the puzzle, it's all over bar the shouting, so...

Berlioz's 'Symphonie Fantastique' features a scary fourth movement, 'March to the Scaffold', in which the composer imagines himself being taken to the scaffold to be beheaded. Just before the fanfare at the end of that movement there is a moment - played pizzicato (plucked) by the strings - where you can hear the composer's head falling into the bucket. [at 6:22]

Well done to everyone, hope that worked as an OOATP?

I don't think I can hear anything that sounds like a head (really anything for that matter) falling into a bucket. There is the loud bang on the drums at 6:25, but before that all I hear is woodwinds.

yes, just at the end of the solo oboe at 6.25 (not 6.22 as I said previously, sorry) there is a sudden bash on the drums. Immediately following that is a strings pizzicato (i.e. plucked) in an octave. Then there is the drum roll. The pizzicato sound is the head falling into the bucket.
