At the time (late 1500's-1600s), it was well known that the gentry had long beds, whereas among the poorer people, some slept sitting up in short beds. There were several reasons for this. It was thought that sleeping sitting up aided digestion. Small beds cost less. And arguably, some folks may have held the superstition that ‘bad air’ could kill you if you lay down flat/nearer the floor. There is also a belief these days that people were short back then, but it’s a myth - men were typically 5’6” - 5’8”.

One day, Will left his village and joined a ship, where the berths were longer, and yet didn’t kill you: that night, he slept lying down in a full length berth (and was still alive in the morning.)
