‘Mr Górski’ is based on the eponymous Russian scientist, Pavlov, who discovered classical conditioning - ‘The Pavlov Effect’ - through his experiments with dogs and bells.
In this puzzle, Mr Górski’s last best friend died a fortnight ago, and he is bereft. In an attempt to distract himself from his loneliness, he gets a job in a coffee & cake shop. But whenever a customer comes in, the shop-bell jingles, which reminds Mr Górski of his old dog and makes him feel both sad and hungry, hence the weight gain. It doesn’t help that he’s no longer walking the little chap.
