Why do Eloise (H/A/F) and Oliver (H/A/M) always leave their apartment 30 seconds apart?

Animal(s) involved? Pet(s)? Technology: smartphone? Cellphone? Door lock? Alarm? Something internet-connected? Networked? Wireless? Battery-powered? Mechanical? Key(s) relevant? Lock(s)? Clothing relevant? Making sure you left the apartment in a safe and economical state? Such a lights off? Stove off? Door actually locked? If three people live there, would it work best if they left all 15 seconds apart? All 30 seconds apart? One first, then the two others after 30 seconds? Two first, then the last one after 30 seconds? Are people not living there relevant? Is an elevator relevant? Other transportation? Relevant on which floor they're living? How many apartments there are? How many floors there are?

Mechanical and: electrical? Electronic? Related to sound? Water? Heat? Would they do this if they lived on the ground floor? Relevant what the first one does after leaving, but before the second one leaves? Does the first one wait just outside the apartment door? Is the door closed between the two leaving? Is the mechanical thing in the door? Is it the door? Is it related to the door?

Is this arrangement mainly for the benefit of the person who leaves later? for the benefit of the person who leaves earlier? equally for both of them? Are they testing something about the workings of the building (for example, the person outside the apartment listens for noises in the pipes when the person still inside turns on the water)?

Do the two people interact in some way after the first person has left the apartment (e.g., the person still in the apartment throws something out the window to the other, who is standing on the sidewalk outside and catches it, or the person outside yells up to the person who stayed behind to tell him/her something, etc.)?

Does an electrical/mechanical thing take 30 seconds to do something? Would any couple living in this apartment find this to be a good way of leaving? Does the first person to leave turn on something? Turn off something? Lights relevant?

Are there lights that turn off after being on for a while? Buttons to press? Sensors to activate? Are there more than one sets of lights, turned on or off independently? Stairway lighting relevant? Is something broken? Are people in other nearby apartments also doing this? People on other floors, apart form the ground floor? Does doing this help keep them from having to do something without adeqaute light?

To make questions clearer, let's call the person who leaves early (whichever of Eloise or Oliver it happens to be on a given day) Person A, and whoever leaves later I will call Person B.

So Person A AND Person B BOTH turn on AND turn off at least one light? If so, is it the same light(s), such that the pattern is light on--light off--light on--light off, in that order? I mean to differentiate this from the case where, for example, Person A turns off light #1 and turns on light #2, the latter of which remains on until Person B leaves, who then turns light #2 off and turns light #1 back on again.

If it's the case of the same light or group of lights being switched four times, is the sequence ON--OFF--30 seconds--ON-OFF, in other words does one on-off cycle occur as each person leaves, with the break in between them? Or is it rather ON--30 seconds--OFF--ON--OFF? or ON--OFF--ON--30 seconds--OFF? Are lights with more than one switch relevant, such that they can be turned on while standing in one location and then off while standing somewhere else some distance away (or vice versa)?

In the case of more than one light or group of lights, is the crux of the issue that one light needs to be already on in order to illuminate the way to the switch of the other light, without having to find it in the dark?

Is it really important for them to do this? Do they want to save electricity? Do they want to check each other in some way? Do they count to 30 seconds? Do they let some technology (like cellphone) do the counting to 30 seconds?

ALSO, I accidentally asked a question which may/may not be a Yes/No question so I edited them to be Yes/No questions. Is this cheating?

Is it really important for them to do this? No, but it makes sense for them to do this Do they want to save electricity? No Do they want to check each other in some way? ALSO, I accidentally asked a question which may/may not be a Yes/No question so I edited them to be Yes/No questions. Is this cheating? Don't worry too much about cheating on this forum, it's perfectly fine to edit questions to make them fit the yes/no pattern :)

Were the lights supposed to have a timer, but it's broken? Do they need to hold down a button for the lights to stay on? Are there multiple buttons that turn on the same lights? Does one person hold down a button near the door while the other walks to the next button, then the other holds down that button while the first one walks?

********SPOILER********

The stairway lights in Eloise's and Oliver's apartment complex have been broken for a while and they need to hold down the button for them to stay on. So whenever they leave their 3rd floor apartment, one of them will walk down the stairs while the other one holds down the light switch near the door. Once the first person reaches the ground floor - which takes about 30 seconds -, they will hold down the light switch there while the other person walks down the stairs.

Well done, GalFisk, and thanks for playing, everyone!
