[GalFisk] The teacher's vase

Postby GalFisk » Thu Dec 07, 2023 11:53 am

How did Jennings' (H/T/M) choleric boarding school teacher, Mr. L. P. Wilkins (H/A/M) come to love one of his two identical hideous ceramic vases?
FSEI - based on a Norwegian radio play, in turn based on the Jennings books by Anthony Buckeridge.

Does he hate the other vase? feel neutral towards it?

Relevant where he got the vases from? If so, did he buy them? receive them as a gift? inherit them?

Relevant what the vases look like? If so, is their shape relevant? colour? pattern?

Does Mr. Wilkins even know that they are two vases? (as opposed to: does a vase get replaced without him knowing?)

Relevant where he got the vases from? Noish. If so, did he buy them? No. receive them as a gift? inherit them? Either one of these works.

Relevant what the vases look like? Only that they're identical and hideous. If so, is their shape relevant? No. colour? pattern? They have cows and purple roses.

Do the vases have historical or antiquarian value? He claims so. are they famous? one of them? No to both.
Are they copies of a famous vase? one of them? No to both.
Relevant how Mr Wilkins came into possession of the vases? See above.
Were the vases empty? Yes. were they used in some way? other than for decoration? No to both.
Did one of the vases get destroyed? Yes, explore. both? No.

Does Mr. Wilkins even know that they are two vases? Yes. (as opposed to: does a vase get replaced without him knowing?) No.

I suppose Jennings is relevant, otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned him in the puzzle statement? My first thought was that Jennings made the vases and/or gave them to his teacher, but it seems we've ruled that out--so was Jennings involved in breaking the vase that broke? Did Jennings put the vase back together after it broke?

Did Mr Wilkins get both vases at once? (as opposed to: he got one, thought it is unique, then got the second one and startet to hate both out of disappointment)
Did he start to miss the broken vase? and thus, started to value the other one that is still there?
Relevant where the vases were in his house? Did they stand close to each other? or, maybe in entirely different parts of the house? outdoors?
Were the vases huge? is now there an empty spot where the vase used to be?
Did other people relevantly see the vases? and/or notice that one of them is gone now?
Did Jennings break the vase? on purpose?

Would or could this have happened at a non-boarding school? A school in another country? (ie, does the location or the culture have any bearing on the event?)

Were the vases filled with anything? Is their position relevant? Is their display relevant? For example, were they placed in a relevant position, on or under a relevant item, or in concert with other decorative items (pictures, other ceramic items, etc)? Was the broken one right next to the window that the ball went through, or did it bounce around before striking the vase?

Other relevant people: Did the relevant school staff make (or deny) a relevant decision? Clean up the mess? physically move something, such as the vases or furniture? Was anyone in the room when the first vase was broken?

Would or could this have happened at a non-boarding school? Possibly, but a lot less probable. A school in another country? Yes. (ie, does the location or the culture have any bearing on the event?) No.

Were the vases filled with anything? No. Is their position relevant? Not really, only that one could get hit by a ball. Is their display relevant? No. For example, were they placed in a relevant position, on or under a relevant item, or in concert with other decorative items (pictures, other ceramic items, etc)? No. Was the broken one right next to the window that the ball went through, or did it bounce around before striking the vase? Irr.

Other relevant people: Did the relevant school staff make (or deny) a relevant decision? Yes. Clean up the mess? Yes but irr. physically move something, such as the vases or furniture? Yes, the remaining intact vase was relevantly moved. Was anyone in the room when the first vase was broken? Yes.

Did the ball come in through the open window? or did it also break the window?
Did Mr Wilkins immediately see who threw the ball?
Did the vase somehow protect Mr Wilkins from being hitten with the ball himself?
Was the intact vase put in place of the broken one?
Was it put to some other place in the room? was it moved out of Mr Wilkins' room?

Was the fundraiser started because of the broken vase? unrelated to it? was it already planned before it broke?
Was the vase the main prize from the very beginning? both vases?
Was it Mr Wilkins' idea to put in the vase as a prize? did he get a compensation for it?
Was there an argument between Mr Wilkins and Jennings on who is the better ball-thrower? Did they have a wager on who wins the competition?
Did Jennings have to pay for the broken vase because he lost the competition?

Did Mr Wilkins start to love the remaining vase when the first one broke? when it was taken to the shop? when the competition started? when he won it back?
Was there a plan to move the vase(s) to the shop from the very beginning? or was this decided after the first one broke? to protect the second one?
Did the people who were in Mr Wilkins' office when the vase broke actually come to collect the vase(s) from there?
Did the vase return to Mr Wilkins' office after the competition? Was it put in the same place? Was it used for something different but decoration?

Did Mr Wilkins' decision to enter the competition come out of an argument he had with Jennings?
Did Mr Wilkins start the argument with something along the lines that Jennings is poor at aiming with the ball? and Jennings suggested Mr Wilkins to show that he can do better?

Did Mr Wilkins start the argument with something along the lines that Jennings is poor at aiming with the ball? and Jennings suggested Mr Wilkins to show that he can do better? Pretty much - Mr. Wilkins saw Jennings training for the competition, and tried to give him a few tips, but Jennings' friends arrogantly rebuffed him.

Hint: a relevant thing happens while the vase is on display in the store, which is the last big piece missing in this puzzle.

Did Jennings' classmates/friends see the vase in the shop? did they like it? did they want to win it?
Did they know that also Mr Wilkins had entered the competition? if so: was their main intention to beat Mr Wilkins? or, rather, did they expect that they easily could beat him? judging by the (in their eyes silly) tips he gave Jennings?

Did the classmate also enter the competition himself?
Did he want Jennings to win for a specific reason? Did he want that Jennings does something with the vase after he won it? like: use it to decorate their room in the dorm? sell it? give it back to Mr Wilkins as compensation for the one he broke?

And that's the final piece, so it's time for the
***SPOILER***
Mr. Wilkins had two identical horrible vases, which he intended to give away to the headmaster, who in turn would give it to a charity his wife was a member of. Jennings accidentally smashed one of them while playing ball, and Mr. Wilkins got so upset that Jennings vowed to go into town and get him a new one. Mr. Wilkins told him they were antique and not made anymore, but he went anyway the next day, and was amazed to find one in a store window. He was informed by the owner that it wasn't for sale, but would be the first prize in a ball-throwing competition at the weekend fair. He managed to convince the headmaster to let them all go to the fair, and when Mr. Wilkins caught him practicing for the competition, and tried to give him some tips, Jennigns' friends were so dismissive that Mr. Wilkins decided to join, and ended up winning, all the while not knowing that his remaining horrible vase was the grand prize. The headmaster, by the way, was the one giving out the prizes, and he knew what Mr. Wilkins felt about the vase.

The Jennings books and radio plays are full of similar hilarious mixups, and are a childhood favorite of mine.
Thanks for playing!
