Many of my co-workers do fieldwork with wild monkeys. To accurately record the monkeys' behaviour, they need to be able to identify individual monkeys in large groups of up to 180 animals. I recently asked one of my co-workers how they tell apart dozens of similar-looking animals, and the answer was: heads, tails, and nipples. Apparently, some female monkeys have very distinctly shaped nipples, depending on how many infants they have nursed and whether those infants had a preference for one of the nipples (i.e. one nipple might be much more "worn" than the other).
