Was the mirror in the backpack? At home? In a bathroom? Was it a regular mirror? Makeup mirror? Pocket mirror? Did you have to look into a mirror to realize your mistake? Is makeup relevant? Did you praise yourself for being well prepared for: travel? Day-to-day life? Disaster? The unforeseen? The unlikely? The probable? Is it a mistake made by people who are rookies at being prepared? At some profession? Or hobby? Or life in general?

Promotions relevant? Salary? Vacation? Negotiations? Other work-related things? This - no need to find out details, and the second part of the puzzle is pretty much solved: I cried because a work-related event made me sad and angry. When I went to the office bathroom, I noticed that my mascara had been smeared, and I concluded that wearing mascara was a rookie mistake because I could have forseen that I might cry that day A raffle? Lottery? Prizes or awards?

********SPOILER********
My job for the last 1.5 years consisted of coordinating an application for a highly competitive research funding line. Two weeks ago, the funding agency announced which projects are invited to submit a full proposal. We knew that we only had a ~30% chance of making it to the second round, so I packed a chocolate bar in case I needed some sugary comfort. When the decision was announced and we found out that our project was rejected, I was so angry and frustrated that I started crying, smearing my mascara. I know that I cry easily, so putting on mascara on a day like this was a rookie mistake.
Well done, GalFisk!
