My job for the last 1.5 years consisted of coordinating an application for a highly competitive research funding line. Two weeks ago, the funding agency announced which projects are invited to submit a full proposal. We knew that we only had a ~30% chance of making it to the second round, so I packed a chocolate bar in case I needed some sugary comfort. When the decision was announced and we found out that our project was rejected, I was so angry and frustrated that I started crying, smearing my mascara.
