Why did he feel that the malfunctioning computer was functioning just right?

Was it a desktop computer? laptop? tablet? anything else?
Did it not start? did input/output devices not work properly? did applications not work properly? crash?
Was the computer already malfunctioning when he got it? did he do something to make it functioning that way? if so: on purpose? Was it his computer at all?
Did he use the computer in a way computers are normally used? or for something entirely different? (like keeping a door open)
Anything criminal or fishy going on here? did the malfunctioning computer give him an alibi or an excuse?
Did he notice at all that the computer was malfunctioning? or did he think it should be that way?
Did he benefit from the malfunction? (thinking of a vending machine that shows a price far too low)

Was the computer already malfunctioning when he got it? I don't know/irr. did he do something to make it functioning that way? if so: on purpose? No to both. Was it his computer at all? It was his work computer, but it could be any computer he used.

Power electronics are supposed to be silent, but sometimes they give off whistling, hissing or clicking noises. My laptop was doing some heavy math (compression of tens of gigs of files) and was making a quiet "rattling" noise just like mechanical harddrives used to do. So while it's all solid state, it sounded "just right" to me who grew up with mechanical harddrives in computers.
