Sorry guys. I have no idea where this was going now, having lost my notes in the mists of time.
Broadly, my friends had a new build house with a steep garden. The snails, masses of them, used to crawl under the fence, up the garden and into the conservatory. We marked them in different colours so we could see if they were the same snails, and how long they took (only a couple of hours). From there it degenerated to betting on the various colours of snail.
