[BLC] No Ears Were Harmed For This Puzzle

Postby BitterLemonCurry » Thu Nov 23, 2023 5:31 pm

Hi puzzlers, this is my first puzzle here in ages.
Please be warned that the solution is really silly…

Herbert the band leader was not happy with the new member, Chris.
„Why were you playing completely out of tune? You have been recommended as a skilled Tuba player.“
„I thought it was sounding strange. But I was just following Mike‘s scoresheet - look!“
„Why has Mike written false instructions into the score? That‘s a real silly prank!“
Paul stepped in, laughing uncontrollably: „That wasn‘t Mike, it was me. Mike had asked for it. But these are definitely not false instructions. I could have been more precise, but you wouldn‘t have liked that.“
He wouldn‘t. Really not so.

What was going on?

All named characters: HAM? When miske asked for it, did he literally request it? Or was he "asking for it" in a metaphorical sense, as in only getting what he deserved? Are the instructions dissonant? Could they have been made to sound good? If so, would that be the "more precise" thing? Did Herbert understand why he wouldn't have liked it? If so, at once? Later? Did the out-of-tune playing cause a desirable result? Avoid something undesirable?

Is the wording Mike used when he asked Paul relevant? Did Paul misunderstand Mike? deliberately?
Was Paul pranking Mike?
Relevant that Chris played the tuba? would it also work when he played another instrument? when he sung?
Relevant what style of music they were playing? was it a famous piece?
Any jokes or stereotypes about tubists relevant?

Would more precise instructions have sounded: better? Just as bad? Exactly the same? Would it work with another instrument playing bass notes? Are the instructions in the form of notes? Is the bass clef relevant? Some other clef? Does the purported additional dislike of more precis instructions have to do with the music that was produced? With the instructions themselves? With something else? Relevant where they were playing? For whom? Were they practicing? Are more people relevant than the named ones?

Was Mike the composer of the piece?
Did the composer write these instructions on the sheet? using words that sound rude in English? is English his native language? did he use standard musical terminology, just the words happen to form an expression that sounds rude in this case?
Did Paul remove part of the words to make it sound less rude?
Were words abbreviated in a non-standard way? Does the rude expression also appear as an acronym or abbreviation? (like ACAB, which also can be a sequence of tones)

Did the composer write these instructions on the sheet? using words that sound rude in English? is English his native language? did he use standard musical terminology, just the words happen to form an expression that sounds rude in this case? No/irrel to all. The composer is innocent.

Did Mike adapt the piece for the instruments used? Did Mike deliberately add rude words? Are different languages relevant? Different proficiencies in a specific language? Is there a particular reason rude words would be bad? Such as Chris being underage? Or religious? Or were they just bad in general? Were there bad words in instructions for any other players? Did Mike ask Paul to remove the rude words? Did Mike add them by mistake? Without thinking that they were rude? Without thinking that they spelled out words? Would the result, had the rude words been kept, that Chris would take offense? Not play? Quit the band? Done something else relevant?

Did Mike adapt the piece for the instruments used? No
Did Mike deliberately add rude words? See below
Are different languages relevant? Yes Different proficiencies in a specific language? And yes
Is there a particular reason rude words would be bad? Such as Chris being underage? Or religious? Or were they just bad in general? the only relevance is that they are Dirty words
Were there bad words in instructions for any other players? not relevantly
Did Mike ask Paul to remove the rude words? Did Mike add them by mistake? Without thinking that they were rude? Without thinking that they spelled out words? Mike asked Paul to write the words into the score, and we can assume that Paul censored them on his own initiative. The extent of Mike knowing that the words constitute dirty language is not relevant.
Would the result, had the rude words been kept, that Chris would take offense? Not play? Quit the band? Done something else relevant? all irrel

Were Mike's instructions on the sheet necessary for Chris? Would he have been able to play it without any of these instructions? Would this have sounded better?
Is there a relevant reason why Mike did not write the instructions himself? was he physically unable? was he not present in this place? did he give his instructions to Paul over the phone?
Did Mike ever see the score sheet?
Were the words Mike used for the instructions proper English words? French? Italian? Latin? musical jargon? a mix of languages? acronyms? abbreviations? symbols?
Was there a relevant misunderstanding between Mike and Paul? Did Mike use a different language but Paul thought it's English?

A person being bad at a language the others were good at: Herbert? Chris? Mike? Paul? Mike (this language is German, answering the obvious next question. Not particularly relevant)

I think we need to pause to clarify what we know so far. So as I get it:

--There was a piece of music written for tuba, but not by any of the relevant people in this puzzle. The band in this puzzle merely wanted to perform this existing piece of music.
--At the point this music was written (by the composer), NEITHER the note names (A, B, C, etc.), NOR any other parts of the musical notation, formed any naughty words.
--Mike prepared a sheet containing the music for this piece, and added something to it/changed something in it. Sans censoring, this alteration would have coincidentally formed a series of naughty English words, and this at least in part involved note names.

Assuming these are all correct, I have some questions here. Did this "adding/changing" amount to putting the parts for different instruments together on the same sheet? providing more detail as to how the music should be played (tempo, etc.)? or, going along with the fact of German being involved, was the original piece in German, and Mike attempted to translate certain parts into English so the rest of the band could understand better? If this last part is true, is that why the changes were unnecessary for Chris--he could have understood the original German just fine?

Ok, now back to the facts.
--So Mike couldn't write the sheet himself. Is this because he lacked some knowledge?
--Instead, Paul wrote it, based on information conveyed by Mike, which would have spelled out naughty words but was otherwise OK. He kept the alteration introduced by Mike in some form, but modified it further to remove the "naughty" words, which also ended up changing the meaning, musically speaking.
--Chris saw only the final version written by Paul, thus playing the piece wrong.

If this is true, did Paul misunderstand Mike and think that the "naughty words" were deliberately added to be naughty, as opposed to being Mike's serious best attempt at conveying the music as he understood it?

Did Mike try to translate something into English for his own later reading/comprehension? Was his translation incorrect?

Did Mike actually intend the naughty words to be read as such (What I mean is, did he actually know he was asking Paul to add these words--as opposed to asking him to write completely different words/symbols that just so happened to look like naughty words when misread)?

Oh, so Mike asked Paul to translate something from German into English? which Mike couldn't do because he didn't know German? And the purpose of this was so that Mike could understand it in the future?

Were the German words part of the original music (as written by the composer)? If so, we've established that the original music did NOT contain naughty words--so then the naughty words would have been introduced by the translation process, correct? which means that they would have entailed some degree of misreading of the translation (since a correct reading of a correct translation should have the same meaning as the original, non-naughty words)--also correct?

Or possibly were the "translated" words never actually German words to begin with, but Mike misinterpreted them as such? and had no idea that when misread as German words, they had naughty meanings?

Who wrote the German naughty words: Mike? Paul? Chris? Herbert? Someone else? Relevant? Is a previous tuba player in the band relevant? Were they written as a prank? For fun? To annoy someone? For sabotage?

Who wrote the German naughty words: Mike? Paul? Chris? Herbert? Someone else? Relevant? None of them (including "Someone else"), and this is relevant
Is a previous tuba player in the band relevant? Only Mike and Chris
Were they written as a prank? For fun? To annoy someone? For sabotage? A bit of all of them, I guess, for svv of "written", but see above

If they weren't written, were they: spoken? Recorded? Encoded? Shouted? Nonexistant? Hallucinated?

Teasing, or off-colour humour...not that relevant how you call it.
More interesting is, how Mike came across these words, and why he wanted to have it translated.

Did he hear them? If so, live? Recorded? Online? Did he think they were funny? Did he think they were serious? Did he think they were the original lyrics? Or a German translation of the original lyrics? Were there any original lyrics? Was the composer German? Edit: if there were original lyrics, did the composer write them?

So, Mike heard a performance of the relevant piece, that had some German words added to it? The singer(s) were satirizing the piece by adding these extra lyrics? but Mike didn't realize this, and liked the sound of the lyrics, so wanted his band to incorporate them into their version of the song(*)? He asked Paul to translate them into English? and Paul, understanding the German, realized that they were naughty words, and modified/censored them?

(*)Or alternatively, was it his own German bandmates who added the satirical naughty words to the song? and he wanted a translation to understand what they were saying?

Ok, the rest does not require any lateral thinking, so here we go:

**** SPOILER ****

Mike is a music student from another country spending some year in Germany, as he is interested in German folk music.
He wants to learn as much as possible about German folk music culture, so he joins the local brass band with his tuba, touring with them around village festivals and the like. Local band member Paul is very impressed with this, and in the early days of Mike's stay, when Mike is still struggling with the German language, he offers to write an English translation of all the lyrics for the pieces the into Mike's score.

How about the lyrics for Na Golici, Mike asked one day.
"But Na Golici has no lyrics"
"There must be some sort of lyrics. Remember the crowd last week? They have greatly enjoyed themselves. And I think they've sung it a few months earlier as well."
"Do you really want me to write THAT down?"
"Yes please, it could be useful for my thesis some day."

Now, Na Golici, also known as Trumpet Echoes, does actually not have lyrics. It's a polka written by Slovene folk music legend Slavko Avsenik for his Oberkrainer quintet, but very popular in arrangements for brass band across German speaking countries (and, I guess, anywhere else).
However, due to the abundance of this piece, the influence of lots of beer, many people who don't like polka music, and with the help of an obscure punk band, some, eh "unofficial lyrics" to this polka (actually only the first part, but anyway) have evolved via oral tradition. These "lyrics" consist of repeating the word for...certain parts of the body, and not the medical terms.

Paul was considerably embarrassed for his compatriots, but then Mike might use that for his thesis...
So he wrote into the score, below the bass notes:

D___ C___ D___ C___ D___ C___ A__ (repeat 8 times)

which is very much a literal translation of said "lyrics".

When Mike was off the band for some time for an exam, he was replaced by Chris. Chris was using Mike's notes - and promptly mistook the D___ C___ A__ thing for the bassline.

Congratulations and thank you for everyone who contributed. It was fun hosting a puzzle here again - the hardest part of setting up the puzzle was to find out the name of that piece (you don't want to google those "unofficial lyrics"...)

Haha, good one! I hate Swedish "dansband" music, mostly due to its insipid lyrics, and have come up with spicier ones on several occasions.
