This would work for any undercover sort of law agency, but is borrowed from an Age of Sail novel. Barnes is captain of a revenue cutter in the 1800s. Normally he and his crew would learn about smuggling operations by mingling with the locals in their taverns. But as a Methodist, he not only refuses to drink or enter a tavern, but he forbids his crew to do likewise. Their record of captures drops to zero.
