[Balin] Would be so fun to munch

Postby BalinTheDwarf » Wed Jan 17, 2024 7:54 pm

In 2019, an organization in Connecticut replaced a natural food product with a non-natural food product. However, people across the dietary spectrum agree that they have an understandable, valid reason for doing so. What did they do and why?

EDIT: Changed the words "organic" / "non-organic" in the puzzle statement to "natural" / "non-natural", as I have learned there are organic and non-organic versions of both of these food products.

Did they replace it with the same type of product? (ie, they didn't replace like beef in their burgers with pork or something.)

Does it matter what the product was? If so, was it meat? Another animal product? Veg? Fruit? Grain?

Is the organization a profit-making organization? Not-for-profit? Are they a grocery store? Restaurant? Food bank? Lunch program? Company that supplies product to grocery stores/restaurants/etc.?

Was their reason for doing so related to cost-cutting? Health? Availability? Environmental impact? The fact that (as far as I know) organic is just a label that can be slapped on things and often doesn't mean anything?

Did the organization (I noticed you didn't say "store", "restaurant", or "business") change the food product they served to their own members (such as in a cafeteria)? or is the organization involved in providing free/low cost food to the public (such as a community food pantry, soup kitchen, etc.)? Alternatively, are they some type of cooperative involved in growing/producing food? Is the food intended for humans at all (as opposed to animal feed)?

Is the non-organic food product something that could be made organically (as opposed to containing some type of man-made ingredient that could never be organic)?

Organic as in made without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or antibiotics for growth? Organic as in part of or produced by a living organism? Did the change improve some aspect of the product? Such as taste? Nutrition? Safety? Looks? Ethics? Religious requirements? Dietary requirements? Allergy considerations?

Was the organic product added as a new product before? or did it replace a similar non-organic product? if so: did customers demand to move back to the non-organic product that was there before? because they liked it more?
Does the organization manufacture the product themselves? or do they buy and resell (or supply for free)? if buy: do they get the non-organic product from the same supplier? or did they have to switch suppliers for some reason? and the new supplier does not have the organic product in stock?
Does the organization supply food according to specific dietary rules? kosher food?

After a bit of checking I've changed "organic" and "non-organic" in the puzzle statement to "natural" / "non-natural." I have also made the changes to those words in the questions asked and have answered accordingly.

Did they replace it with the same type of product? No (ie, they didn't replace like beef in their burgers with pork or something.) It was nothing like this, correct

Does it matter what the product was? Yes If so, was it meat? One of them Another animal product? Veg? Fruit? Grain? No to rest for the other one

Is the organization a profit-making organization? Yes Not-for-profit?
Are they a grocery store? Restaurant? Food bank? Lunch program? Company that supplies product to grocery stores/restaurants/etc.? None of these

Was their reason for doing so related to cost-cutting? Health? This, No to rest Availability? Environmental impact? The fact that (as far as I know) organic is just a label that can be slapped on things and often doesn't mean anything? (I left "organic" alone in this question but the same -- not related to their reasoning -- applies to the word "natural.")

Did the organization (I noticed you didn't say "store", "restaurant", or "business") Well-spotted change the food product they served to their own members (such as in a cafeteria)? No or is the organization involved in providing free/low cost food to the public (such as a community food pantry, soup kitchen, etc.)? No Alternatively, are they some type of cooperative involved in growing/producing food? No Is the food intended for humans at all (as opposed to animal feed)? They are foods humans eat, Yes

Is the non-natural food product something that could be made naturally (as opposed to containing some type of man-made ingredient that could never be natural)? ...No, in that it doesn't occur on its own and has to be (for lack of a better word) crafted

Organic as in made without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or antibiotics for growth? Organic as in part of or produced by a living organism? See edit at the top of this set of answers -- the "natural" refers to "occurring in nature without human production or interference
Did the change improve some aspect of the product? No Such as taste? Nutrition? Safety? Looks? Ethics? Religious requirements? Dietary requirements? Allergy considerations?

Was the natural product added as a new product before? No or did it replace a similar non-natural product? No if so: did customers demand to move back to the non-natural product that was there before? because they liked it more?
Does the organization manufacture the product themselves? or do they buy and resell (or supply for free)? This
if buy: do they get the non-natural product from the same supplier? No but Irrel or did they have to switch suppliers for some reason? Irrel and the new supplier does not have the natural product in stock? Irrel
Does the organization supply food according to specific dietary rules? Noish kosher food? I don't think so, Irrel

Is the intent that the food product (formerly meat) gets eaten? Is it put to some other use? E.g. beef fat being used for candles/soaps, animal collagen being used for glue etc?

Is your title a reference to Arthur the Aardvark?

Is the intent that the food product (formerly meat) gets eaten? No (and I should clarify the "formerly meat" - either the natural product, or the non-natural product, is meat. The other is not)
Is it put to some other use? Yope E.g. beef fat being used for candles/soaps, animal collagen being used for glue etc? No, not like this

Is your title a reference to Arthur the Aardvark? Yes, well-spotted! Not at all relevant though, and only because I was trying to think of a food-related quote to use as a title - that jingle from that episode kept cycling through my head.

Is the organization a government organization? an NGO? a charity? No to all

I think I gave a misleading answer early on that has caused this to go off-track:

Does it matter what the product was? Yes If so, was it meat? One of them Another animal product? Veg? Fruit? Grain? No to rest for the other one

Both products are food. The non-natural one is meat. The natural one... I'm not sure of those categories exactly qualifies. It does come from a plant.

So the non-natural product is made from actual animal meat, but is processed somehow? or is it some sort of lab-grown tissue/cells?

And the natural product it replaced was plant-based, but wouldn't be called a fruit, vegetable, or grain? Was it something like tofu or tapioca pudding, where the food was not eaten in whole form as it grows on the plant?

Are living organisms other than the origin plant relevant to the natural product? Was it replaced because it was unsafe? Harmful? If so, for the one who ate the food product? Someone involved in manufacture? Harvest? Someone else? Pests relevant? Pesticides? Was making it from meat safer? More environmentally friendly? Less wasteful?

Did a sports team have a peanut as their mascot? And replace it with a meat-based mascot? No, but good guess

INTERIM RECAP

A sports team stopped selling peanuts at games because of allergy concerns.
Because of this, they replaced peanuts with a certain meat food product in an as-yet-undetermined context.

****SPOILER****

When Dunkin' Park (home of the minor league Hartford Yard Goats) went nut-free in 2019, they changed the line "buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack" in the song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." That line is instead sung as "Buy me a hot dog and Yard Goats cap."
