[Doriana] Nothing but trouble

Postby doriana_ » Mon Jan 22, 2024 2:25 pm

My lacrosse team is part of a larger sports club that has a combined office/weight room/event venue building. The club proudly displays its flag in front of the building. However, recently some members (H/A/mixed) suggested we take down the flag. Why?

Is the flag damaged? Ugly? Does it relevantly remind of some other flag? Some other thing? Relevant that some members suggested this? Or could it be just one? Or all? Culture relevant? Politics?

Is the flag visible from the street? is the idea to take it down and put it in a place where it's better visible?
Does it have text in it? letters? words? the name of the club? a logo? pictures? multiple colors? the foundation year?
Are those who suggest to take down the flag members of the club? of the lacrosse team? employees of the club?
Are there other organizations using this building? relevant?
Does the flag occasionally mislead people? do they enter the building because they expect something different to be there?
Did anyone complain about the flag? could it be offensive for someone?
Has the flag relevant similarities with some other flag? with the flag of an opponent team in the league?
Suppose the flag is taken down: relevant what then will happen with it?

if you say the flag is proudly displayed in front of the building but not visible from the street: Is the building not situated directly at the roadside? is it in a park/forest? at the other end of the sports ground? is the entrance (and thus the flag) on the backside of the building?
Is the logo large and prominent on the flag, but the name of the club small? So people would see the flag but not associate it with the club?
Is the club well-known in your town? is another famous club of your town relevant?
WAG: Covid-19 relevant? Did people think there is a testing or vaccination station in this building?

Does the flag mislead about the type of building? about the type of organization? about where the entrance is?
Are the people who get misled: members of the club? people working in the building? people not related to the club? visitors? spectators? athletes? members of guest teams? people who are there for the first time?
Do the people who get mislead usually arrive there by car? by public transport? by bicycle? walking?
Is there a sports ground adjacent on the side where the flag is? relevant?

Is there anything else relevant in this building? Or near it? If so, outside? In another building? Could the flag make people go to the wrong place? If so, people looking for your place? For another place?

Can it make the lake seem safer than it is? Make it seem suitable for an activity it's not? Seem like something other than a lake? Seem like it has facilities that it doesn't? Such as a pier? Or beach? Or lifeguard?

When the suggestion to take the flag down was made just recently, does it mean in the last few weeks? winter relevant?
Could the flag imply that the lake is safe for skating?

Yes to all!

********SPOILER********
Our sports club has a nice lakefront property where we display our flag - the club's name and logo on a white background - in front of our building. Recently, it was cold enough for the lake to freeze over, but it wasn't yet safe to walk/skate on the ice. Some members suggested we take down our flag because it could be mistaken for a plain white flag from afar, which some people might interprete as a sign that the lake is safe for skating.

Well done, GalFisk and Sundowner!

Cool, I didn't know white flags meant safe ice. I don't think that's a thing here.

I'm not even sure white flags are a thing here. There was a red flag at the other side of the lake to incidate that it's not safe for walking/skating, so maybe people just made the connection in their heads?
