Dead from: natural causes? Accident? Predation? Slaughter? Hunting? Extermination? Age? Disease? Is the bird bigger than a breadbox? Did it save the man's life from: accident? Disease? Murder? Suicide? War? Genocide? Was the bird dead for the entirety of the saving? If not, was its actual death integral to the saving? did the saving happen during one instant? In a period of seconds? Minutes? Hours? Days? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Did the man see the bird? Eat the bird? Bury the bird? Pity the bird? Find the bird? Hunt the bird? Kill the bird? Have a relevant emotion as a reaction to the bird? Take a relevant action as a reaction to the bird? Was the bird a real once-alive bird? If it was dead at the time it started saving the man, did it die seconds before? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Decades? Centuries? Millennia? Eons? Is the man HAM? Is the gender of the bird relevant? Is it an adult bird? Relevant?

Did whatever event that would have caused him to die by murder-ish nonetheless happen? And he avoided it by, say, being somewhere else? Having someone else get in harm's way? Not antagonising the murderer-ish?

Is he at risk from hunters? Is he a hunter himself? Is a particular hunting event going on?

Upon seeing the dead bird, does our hero say anything relevant? Do anything relevant? Come to a relevant realisation? Does he foresee the danger to himself as soon as he sees the bird?

Did the hunter kill the bird? on purpose? was he hunting birds? was it a duck/quayle/snipe? other common game bird? was there something special about this bird? maybe unknown to the hunter? did the bird carry a transmitter/camera/message/something else?
if you say the man who intended to kill the other one did not do anything illegal: is it because he did not actually kill him? not even attempt to do it? or would he have had a justified reason to kill the man? maybe in self-defence? or to prevent another crime?
Is any of the three people police? army? secret service? other government force?

Is the killer and the victim the same person? No. If the hunter didn't kill the bird, did the hunter injure the bird? Er, whoops, made a mistake there. The "hunter" did kill the bird. Did the killer kill the bird? Did the victim kill the bird? Did someone else? No to all. Relevant what the hunter was hunting? No. Mild FA. did the killer have a pistol? Assume this. Revolver? Possibly. Machine gun? Cannon? Other firearm? Improvised firearm? Non-fire arm? None of the others.

Was the hunter not actively hunting? Hard to answer without misleading. Was the bird killed by accident? In self defense? No to both.

Was the hunter really a hunter? Or was he an assassin? Or soldier? Did the hunter intend to kill the bird? If so, was it killed because he wanted a dead bird? Wanted to send a signal? Was practicing shooting? Did the hunter know the killer was present? Did the killer decide not to kill due to fear of being discovered? Killed? Failing to kill? Is the killer a sniper? Is the hunter a sniper? Is the profession of the victim relevant?

Was the killer afraid of being killed by: the hunter? The victim? Someone else? Law enforcement? Was this fear realistic? Relevant why the killer wanted to kill the victim? While not wanting the dead bird, did the "hunter" want the bird dead? Was he perhaps protecting something? Such as crops? Did the hunter want to impress the victim? Or someone else? Was the shot that kllled the bird particularly skillful? Or lucky?
I'm a bit confused about who knows what, so let me collect all the questions here and reiterate some of them:
When the hunter shoots the bird, is the victim present? If so, does the hunter know this? Does the victim know the hunter is present?
When the victim sees the bird, is the hunter present? If so, does the victim know this? Is the killer present? If so, does the victim know this? If the hunter and the killer is present, does the hunter know that the killer is present? Does the killer know that the hunter is present?

Was the killer afraid of being killed by: the hunter? The victim? This. Someone else? Law enforcement? Was this fear realistic? Yope. Relevant why the killer wanted to kill the victim? No. While not wanting the dead bird, did the "hunter" want the bird dead? Yes. Was he perhaps protecting something? No. Such as crops? Did the hunter want to impress the victim? Possibly. Or someone else? Was the shot that kllled the bird particularly skillful? Or lucky? Assume this.
I'm a bit confused about who knows what, so let me collect all the questions here and reiterate some of them: Good thinking.
When the hunter shoots the bird, is the victim present? Yes. If so, does the hunter know this? Yes. Does the victim know the hunter is present? Yes.
When the victim sees the bird, is the hunter present? Yes. If so, does the victim know this? Yes. Is the killer present? Not immediately. If so, does the victim know this? Yes. If the hunter and the killer is present, does the hunter know that the killer is present? Yes. Does the killer know that the hunter is present? Yes, but...

Does the killer know the hunter shot the bird? No. Does the killer think the victim did it? Yes. Does the dead bird make the killer think the victim is: armed? A good shot? An incredible shot? This.

Spoiler

This story is told of Mark Twain (Victim), who was challenged to a duel by an excellent shot (Killer). Unused to weapons, Twain and a friend (Hunter) went to the dueling grounds early and the friend attempted to train Twain to use a pistol. As a demonstration, he shot at a small bird nearby and blew its head off. Twain was a hopeless learner, but when his opponent turned up, Twain's friend pointed out the dead bird and explained excitedly how Twain had shot it from long range. The opponent conceded at once.
