[WiZ] Jumping Jesus, Holy Cow

Postby WiZ » Sun Jun 16, 2024 11:27 pm

One of my friends was very pleased when British singer-songwriter David Gray's career took off. He isn't a fan of his music and has no personal connection to him. So what made him so happy?

True story. No caveat.

Is his name also David Gray? Does he enjoy the extra attention? Or the unGoogleability?

As it's quite a while when David Gray started his career: was your friend still a child back then? a teenager? high school student?
Did sharing the name with David Gray help your friend in some situation? at school? did he get something for free?

BitterLemonCurry

Is there even a third relevant David Gray? yes!

Either this puzzle was more obvious than I thought, or you're all just especially clever clogs. Suspect the latter(al)

Is he a fan of the third David Gray? A friend? Enemy? Some other relationship? Does the third David Gray have a relevant response to the singer's career? Is his profession relevant? Is your friend's profession relevant?

Does your friend David Gray know about the third David Gray? Or know the third David Gray? Is anything the third David Gray does relevant? Or knows? Would your friend not be happy about the success if there was no third DG? Would it work if the successful DG was successful in some other way? If so, would it work as long as the name was well known? Well known in a positive context? Is anything about the third DG apart from the name relevnant? Is the third DG alive? WAG: is the third DG known for something negative, which became overshadowed by famous DG? Did associations connected to your friend DG's name go from negative to positive?

Does your friend David Gray know about the third David Gray? yes Or know the third David Gray? no Is anything the third David Gray does relevant? yes Or knows? no Would your friend not be happy about the success if there was no third DG? He would be indifferent to it Would it work if the successful DG was successful in some other way? most probably yes If so, would it work as long as the name was well known? no Well known in a positive context? yes Is anything about the third DG apart from the name relevnant? yes Is the third DG alive? no WAG: is the third DG known for something negative, which became overshadowed by famous DG? yes Did associations connected to your friend DG's name go from negative to positive? yes

***** SPOILER *****

My friend's name is also David Gray. He shares this name not only with the singer but with New Zealand's (at the time) most prolific mass murderer, who killed 13 people at Aramoana in 1990.

So, after White Ladder went quintuple-platinum in New Zealand, my friend saw a change: when he introduced himself to people they started responding with 'Oh, like the singer' rather than 'Oh, like the Aramoana guy'.

Congratulations, GalFisk (actually, this time) on the solution, and thank you all for playing!
