Most of the time, Lottie (H/A/F) wishes her fiancé Sean (H/A/M) would stop smoking. However, she was recently very happy that he is a smoker. Why?

Years ago I was part of work teams and such where if you were a smoker, you got your five minute (or whatever) smoke break, and if you weren't a smoker you had to keep working. Anything like this relevant? Does him being a smoker mean that he gets regular breaks? Does it mean that other people working with him also get breaks? Is he perhaps the lead on something, and Lottie works under him, so she gets breaks too?

One night, Sean steps out for a cigarette before going to bed. On the patio, he finds Rocket, one of Sean's and Lottie's three pet cats, severely injured. Rocket had been run over by a car, but made it back to their patio after the accident. Sean and Lottie were able to rush Rocket to the emergency vet just in time. If Sean hadn't gone outside to smoke that night, Rocket wouldn't have survived.
