[Sundowner] Un petit d'un petit

Postby Sundowner64 » Mon Jan 20, 2025 11:20 am

The whole country is complaining about inflation and the high prices, especially on food. However, there is one food dealer in my town who is still selling his stuff at the prices of 2014. What is he selling and why does he not put up the price?

This might be a quick one.

Is he selling food? Drink? Is he doing it in order to be nice? Was the 2014 price really high? Is he making a profit on this stuff? Is he selling everyhting he carries at 2014 prices? Has he done so since 2014?

Is he selling food? Yes. Drink? No. Is he doing it in order to be nice? This might be the case but I suspect there is one more reason. Was the 2014 price really high? It was a bit pricey, yes, but people considered the quality worth the price. Is he making a profit on this stuff? I guess so, otherwise he would have stopped this business. Is he selling everything he carries at 2014 prices? One product is specifically relevant. Has he done so since 2014? He did not change the price since 2014 when he opened the business.

Does the food contain: grain? Dairy? Egg? Poultry? Fish? Shellfish? Meat? Veggies? Mushrooms? Herbs? Spices? Sugar? Salt? Preservatives? Water? Oil? Is it cooked? Baked? Fried? Deep fried? Steamed? Frozen? Dried? Freeze dried? Served hot? Cold? Room temperature? Is it eaten directly? Taken home? Put in the fridge at home? The freezer? The pantry? Is it eaten at home? On the go? In a restaurant? Café? Other eating establishment? Is it still pricey? Does it still hold the same quality? Is it a snack? Does it have any relevant health properties? If so, good? Bad? Both? Is any type of diet relevant? Relevant how this food is packaged? If so: in plactic? Paper? Glass? Tin cans? Foil? Not at all?

Does the food contain: grain? Dairy? Egg? This. Poultry? Fish? Shellfish? Meat? Veggies? Mushrooms? Herbs? Spices? Sugar? Salt? Preservatives? Water? Oil? No to the rest. Is it cooked? Baked? Fried? Deep fried? Steamed? Frozen? Dried? Freeze dried? Served hot? Cold? Room temperature? If you mean in which condition it is sold in that place, then none of them. Is it eaten directly? Unlikely, but possible. Taken home? Yes. Put in the fridge at home? Likely, but not necessarily. The freezer? No. The pantry? Yes. Is it eaten at home? Yes. On the go? Possibly, but unlikely. In a restaurant? Café? Other eating establishment? They certainly sell their stuff also to eating establishments, but that's not what the place itself is. They just sell the raw food. Is it still pricey? Not really. It's rather a good deal now for this quality. Does it still hold the same quality? Yes. Is it a snack? As said above. You could, but normally it is not. Does it have any relevant health properties? If so, good? Bad? Both? It's not an unhealthy product per se. But as with everything, too much is not good either. Is any type of diet relevant? No. Relevant how this food is packaged? Mildly. If so: in plactic? Paper? Glass? Tin cans? Foil? Not at all? Usually in a cardboard tray.

Does he simply sell eggs? If so from his own chickens? Could he put up the price? Does the low price relevantly ensure that they sell out quickly? So that he doesn't have to worry about storage?

Are the eggs chicken eggs? Is it relevant what creature they are from?
Is the quantity they are sold in relevant?
Is the location of the seller relevant? If yes, does he sell from home? A (farmer's) market? A shop? A supermarket?
Is there something about the town layout relevant? (Size, density, transit options, alternative places to buy eggs in?)

Are the eggs chicken eggs? Yes. Is it relevant what creature they are from? Well, ordinary chicken eggs.
Is the quantity they are sold in relevant? Mildly.
Is the location of the seller relevant? Yes(ish). If yes, does he sell from home? Yes, from the green where the chickens are kept. A (farmer's) market? A shop? A supermarket?
Is there something about the town layout relevant? (Size, density, transit options, alternative places to buy eggs in?) Not really. There is a lot of other places where you could get eggs, even nearby this place.

Is some aspect of keeping chickens relevant? Do people who buy his eggs provide anything relevant besides money? Do they feed the chickens? Ar the chickens free range? Relevant? Releant how many chickens he has? How many eggs he sells? How often he sells them? Relevant what happens to old chickens when they stop laying? Does he breed chickens? Or buy them? Relevant?

Is some aspect of keeping chickens relevant? Not really. Do people who buy his eggs provide anything relevant besides money? No. Do they feed the chickens? No. Ar the chickens free range? Yes. Relevant? No. Releant how many chickens he has? No. How many eggs he sells? No. How often he sells them? No, but explore. Relevant what happens to old chickens when they stop laying? No. Does he breed chickens? Or buy them? I have no idea. Relevant? So, no.

Does he sell them daily? Every other day? More than 3 times a week? Once a week? Less often? Do people come to his farm to buy them? Does he transport them anywhere? Relevant how many eggs each customer buys? What they do with them after buying them? How they pay?

Does he sell them daily? Yes, explore. Every other day? More than 3 times a week? Once a week? Less often? Do people come to his farm to buy them? Yes. Does he transport them anywhere? Not relevantly. Relevant how many eggs each customer buys? In trays of 10. Probably not relevant. What they do with them after buying them? Not relevant. How they pay? Somewhat relevant, explore.

Does he sell them all day? At a certain time? At multiple set times? Do people pay in person? Pay before? After? Do they order and pay online/on phone, and pick up in person? do they pay cash? With card? Bank transfer? Cheque? Payment app/service? Relevant? Doe the current price make payment especially convenient?

Title relevant?

Is his marketing tied into the cost of the eggs? Is the price tied to a slogan he has? Is it tied to the name of his company? (If the currency were dollars, he could've advertised "10 eggs for a BAWK.")

Does it matter where he sells his stuff? Does he own a regular grocery shop? Does he sell at a farmers market?

If people are paying in cash, does he keep them at this price because there is some reason that at this location they would always have the exact amount needed on them?

Does he sell them all day? Yes. At a certain time? At multiple set times? Do people pay in person? Yes. Pay before? Strictly, this. After? Do they order and pay online/on phone, and pick up in person? No. do they pay cash? Yes. With card? No. Bank transfer? No. Cheque? No. Payment app/service? No. Relevant? Yes. Does the current price make payment especially convenient? To some extent, yes. But there are other prices that would be equally convenient.

trebor2
Title relevant? Only insofar that it refers to eggs.
Is his marketing tied into the cost of the eggs? Is the price tied to a slogan he has? Is it tied to the name of his company? (If the currency were dollars, he could've advertised "10 eggs for a BAWK.") No to all. (actually, he does very little marketing)
Does it matter where he sells his stuff? Yes. Does he own a regular grocery shop? No. Does he sell at a farmers market? Neither.
If people are paying in cash, does he keep them at this price because there is some reason that at this location they would always have the exact amount needed on them? No.

Does he sell them at a stand at his farm? a self-service refrigerator or cabinet out by the street (what I mean is, some people have something like a gap in the fence around their yard where they have a cabinet or refrigerator set up with home grown produce or homemade food, that people can walk up to, drop money through a slot, and then take out an item from inside)?

Exactly this, but the payment part needs some more elaboration.

Does he sell them through a vending machine? Is the payment verified somehow? If so, mechanically? Electronically? Does he sell them in something resembling a gumball machine? Other machanism where coins are physically a part of how it operates? Is the payment made with bills? Coins? Just one coin? Just two coins?

Does he sell them in something resembling a gumball machine? Something like that, though I think the machine was actually built to sell eggs, as it has a refrigerated section with shelves for the egg packages. Other mechanism where coins are physically a part of how it operates? Not sure but the coins are physically verified. Is the payment made with bills? Coins? Coins only. Just one coin? Just two coins? The number of coins does not matter. The machine recognizes them and even gives change. (provided the slot for change is not empty)

Does he not put up the price, because that would require changes to the machine? Because that is impossible with the machine? Does the convenience of the machine outweigh the lower profits? Would enabling the machine to put up the price cost more than it gained? Would it require a new machine? Replacing the machine with a person? Does using the machine relevantly free up time for other things? Such as tending to the animals?

Does using the machine relevantly free up time for other things? Such as tending to the animals? Spot on.

Here we go..

SPOILER
In 2014 a farmer started to rent some grass land to keep chickens there. At the roadside he put up a little wooden cabin with a vending machine to sell the eggs. His price was 3 EUR for 10 eggs which was a bit up-price back then (normal grocery price about 2,50 EUR) but hey, fresh eggs from happy chickens, it was worth the price. The price has not changed since then, although you now hardly get eggs at the grocery at this price. But every time I buy eggs there and look at this antediluvian vending machine I think maybe it's just not possible to set a different price, or noone knows how to do it.

A somewhat counterintuitive example of how technology helps to keep the prices low.

Congrats to GalFisk for the solve.

(for our readers from the U.S.: it's 3 EUR for ten eggs, not for one :))
