[trebor] How Great Thou Art

Postby trebor2 » Wed Mar 19, 2025 5:43 am

For a long while, he was an inspiration to many people. He has recently inspired many more. However, one of the people he initially inspired has broken the hearts of the people he has inspired recently.

Who is he? What has he done to inspire? And who is the person who has broken hearts?

All "he"s refer to the same person.

Did he inspire the long-while and recen people in different batches? In different ways? In one continuous swoop? Did he inspire people to: be something? Do something? Learn something? Make something? Change something? Did he inspire art? Technology? A movement? Politics? Science? Medicine? Break harts: romantically? Literally? Ideologically?

Is he still alive? was he ever alive? or is/was he fictional?
Did he stop to inspire people at some point? (because he died?)
Was the time in the past when he inspired the people more than 5 years ago? more than 10 years? more than 50 years? more than 100 years? more than 500 years?
Did the people he inspired share something? a common region of origin? culture? language? religion? profession/occupation? interests?
Is the person who broke hearts still alive? was he/she still alive while he/she broke hearts?
Did the act of breaking hearts happen before/while/after the recent wave of inspiration?
Did the person break hearts on purpose?

Galfisk:

Did he inspire the long-while and recen people in different batches? Yes. In different ways? Yes. In one continuous swoop? Did he inspire people to: be something? This, for the long-while.Do something? I'll say this, for the recent.Learn something? Make something? Change something? Did he inspire art? Technology? A movement? This is very relevant to the recent stuff. Politics? And so is this.Science? Medicine? Break harts: romantically? Literally? Ideologically? This.

Sundowner:

Is he still alive? No.was he ever alive? Yes.or is/was he fictional?
Did he stop to inspire people at some point? (because he died?) More just that he aged and time moved on.
Was the time in the past when he inspired the people more than 5 years ago? more than 10 years? more than 50 years? This is closest. About 45 - 80 years ago, give or take. more than 100 years? more than 500 years?
Did the people he inspired share something? Yes. a common region of origin? This would apply for most of them. culture? Broadly speaking, you could say this. Probably not in the way you mean, though.language? religion? profession/occupation? This, and... interests? this. But they are one and the same.
Is the person who broke hearts still alive? Yes. was he/she still alive while he/she broke hearts? So yes.
Did the act of breaking hearts happen before/while/after the recent wave of inspiration? Ongoing, but started slightly before.
Did the person break hearts on purpose? I doubt it. But in my opinion, they should've known it would happen.

Did he inspire the first batch actively? Passively? Did he inspire the second batch actively? Passively? Could he have inspired the first batch without inspiring the second one? Inspired the second batch withtout having inspired the first one? Did he inspire the first batch to take up a certain profession? Hobby? Passion? Did he inspire the second batch differently because: he did something differently? Technology had changed? Society had changed? Does the movement concern itself with: money? Business? Power? Environmental issues? Societal issues? Inequality? Does it want to improve something? Remove something? Was the hearbreaker in possession of any relevant power? Or mass appeal? If so, financial? Political? Religious? Medial? Celebritial? Military? Terroristic? Was the inspirerin possession of any relevant power? Or mass appeal? If so, financial? Political? Religious? Medial? Celebritial? Military? Terroristic?

Did he inspire the first batch actively? Passively? Can you explain what you mean by this question? Did he inspire the second batch actively? Passively? This.Could he have inspired the first batch without inspiring the second one? Yes. He did, until recently. Inspired the second batch withtout having inspired the first one? Not really. Did he inspire the first batch to take up a certain profession? Hobby? Passion? Yes to all of these. Did he inspire the second batch differently because: he did something differently? Technology had changed? Society had changed? This is closest out of the three. Does the movement concern itself with: money? Business? Power? Environmental issues? Societal issues? How broadly do you mean this?Inequality? One could argue it's concerned with all of these, to some degree. Explore.Does it want to improve something? Remove something? These aren't quite it. Was the hearbreaker in possession of any relevant power? Or mass appeal? This. If so, financial? Political? Politics are very much relevant. But the heartbreaker's power is not political.Religious? Medial? Celebritial? It's this. Military? Terroristic? Was the inspirerin possession of any relevant power? Or mass appeal? Yes.If so, financial? Political? Religious? Medial? Celebritial? And yes to this.Military? Terroristic?

Actively: telling people that they must, should, or can do something. Passively: being well known for something seen as positive, meaning others want to be like that as well.

Can we call the inspirer Trey, and the heartbreaker Matt?
Was Trey an actor? Singer? Musician? Painter? Composer? Poet? Author? Director? TV personality? Leader? CEO? Rich person?
Was Matt an actor? Singer? Musician? Painter? Composer? Poet? Author? Director? TV personality? Leader? CEO? Rich person?
Did Trey inspire people to: vote? Become politicians? Activists? Did Matt break hears by: saying something? Doing something? Endorsing someone? Or something? Renouncing someone? Or something? Charity relevant? Pop culture? Relevant where in the world this happened?

Actively: telling people that they must, should, or can do something. Passively: being well known for something seen as positive, meaning others want to be like that as well. In that case, he inspired both batches passively.

Can we call the inspirer Trey, and the heartbreaker Matt? Sure.
Was Trey an actor? Singer? Musician? Painter? Composer? Poet? Author? Director? TV personality? Leader? CEO? None of these. Rich person? I'm sure he got rich through his profession, but he was not famous for being rich.
Was Matt an actor? Singer? Musician? Painter? Composer? Poet? Author? Director? TV personality? Leader? CEO? No to all. Rich person? He's definitely rich, but that is not the source of his fame.
Did Trey inspire people to: vote? Become politicians? Activists? This, for the second round of inspiring. None of them for the first inspiring. Did Matt break hears by: saying something? Doing something? Endorsing someone? This. Or something? Renouncing someone? Or something? Charity relevant? Pop culture? Relevant where in the world this happened? Very.

Did he play: aggressively? Yes. Fair? DOYD. Non-violently? Much the opposite. Elegantly? To win? Yes, but something else, too. To make his country proud? His fans?Neither of these, but there is a group of people relevant to his attitude when playing. Relevant how he did anything apart from playing? No, with a small ish. If the ish doesn't get solved when the rest of the puzzle does, no biggie.

Sundowner:

Are the recent elections in Canada relevant here? Yes. Anyone's campaign or slogan? Not an official slogan, but yes. Explore.

Did he fight? Play dirty? This. Debatably. But this is the relevant aspect.Skirt rules? Was a rule relevantly changed because of him? Did he play to make the other team lose? Look bad? Not these (although he certainly would've wanted the other team to lose), but he did want to affect the opposition somehow. Did he show off? Dominate? Humiliate? Play selfishly? Selflessly? Neither of these, really. Think not of the self.

Is his team relevant? Yes, if you mean the people he played with. Not if you mean exactly what city and name they represented. The opposing team? Same sort of answer. No specific team, but opposing players, yes. Home games? Away games? His ideals could come up whether home or away.

Relevant that Howe was known for getting into fights? (A "Gordie Howe hat trick" is a goal, an assist, and a fight.) It's not fighting, but another physical thing he was known for. That involves arms.
Did he fight in order to defend other teammates? YES, with the caveat that it's not his fighting that is relevant, but another physical thing.

Did he use his physical strength to discourage the opposing team from engaging in fights? He did something physical to discourage the opposition from continuing to play dirty against his teammates once he felt they'd already crossed the line.

Fighting and cross-checking aren't it, but you're close. Both physically and in terms of intent. I'm going to be picky about getting the right action (which is, like fighting and cross-checking, also a penalty) because it's spawned a phrase and movement.

Slapping? given that "slapping" could also mean to impose tariffs?
Like in "If someone slaps you, slap back"? No, but everyone's skating around the solution, so I think it's time for a

$POYLER..............

Gordie Howe was a prolific scorer and hockey star who was not afraid to play physically. As mentioned, a Gordie Howe hat trick is a goal, an assist, and a fight in the same game. He was also known for leading with his elbows when delivering a check (a hit), particularly when the opposing player had already done something dirty to one of Howe's teammates. He'd get his elbow up and lead with it. Elbowing in general is a penalty in hockey, but leading with an elbow when you're going in for a check can be particularly dangerous. Especially given that if you put your elbow up beside you (you check with the side of your body), then it's at about head height. Howe would get his elbows up when he thought an opposing player deserved it.

Howe inspired Gretzky, as a goal-scorer and playmaker, as well as with his demeanour off the ice. He was also proud to be Canadian. Fast forward to now, and Gretzky has worn MAGA apparel and spent time at Mar-a-Lago. He has gone from being someone we're proud of to a traitor. Meanwhile, Mike Myers went on Saturday Night Live in January or so, crooked his arm, and mouthed "elbows up" in reference to Trump and the tariffs, providing a rallying cry for a movement.

To clarify a bit more, this also relates to an effort to buy more Canadian products (or at least non-American products), to avoid booking travel to the US (and to cancel travel plans that were already in place), and, on a federal government level, to reduce or eliminate barriers to interprovincial trade within Canada. And to seek out trade partnerships with other countries when it's clear that the US government is not to be trusted.

Trump's 51st state rhetoric, and then starting a trade war with us, would be akin to an opposing player going after someone on Howe's team unprovoked and with the intent to injure. Howe's response would be to lead with the elbow and hit right back, instead of just letting the aggressor run rampant.

No I get why someone is against Trump... what I mean is how "elbows up" would be a meme.

It's become a phrase, spread like a meme. For instance, my premier (the leader of my province, who is right-wing and an embarrassment to many people here) has argued that the best way forward is to appease Trump. The leader of the official opposition, and many pundits, have said this is not the time for pandering to MAGA and that our policies need to be elbows up.

It's also a phrase that just regular people are using, when we're talking about avoiding US products or travel. It wasn't in the common vernacular last year, but it sure is this year. Spread like a meme, and everyone here knows what you mean when you say it.
