[BLC] The not-so-happy diner

Postby BitterLemonCurry » Wed Aug 27, 2025 8:46 am

Sometimes, you see a puzzle posted and think like, oh, I had wanted to post the same puzzle before.
Then it turns out that one is different.
Here is my puzzle with the same statement but a different solution. I'm switching genders just for distinction, but the genders are actually not relevant.

She was amazed when she heard the waiter tell her to leave.

Did this happen in a restaurant? in some other eating place?
Is she a patron? Did she come to eat there? Did she order anything? with that very same waiter?
Was she served anything? Did she eat or drink there? if so: did she pay for it?
Was she happy to be told that she can leave?

Did she want to leave? Did she want to come to the restaurant at all?
Is the waiter the person serving her / taking her order? Or is "the waiter" another patron of the restaurant who happens to be a waiter also?

Did the waiter tell her to leave before she ordered anything? while she ordered? after hearing her order?
Did she ask the waiter something before she ordered?
Were the waiter's words very strict? or, rather, a friendly recommendation or suggestion?
Would she have been able to stay if she wanted? if so: could staying (eating anything?) have turned into a bad experience for her?
Did the waiter give her some information she did not have before when he told her to leave? if so: would she have gone to this restaurant if she had had this information?
Food served in this restaurant relevant? ingredients? method of preparation? origin of food?
WAG: Is the restaurant not kosher?

Was the waiter afraid she would scare off other patrons?
or that it could lead to negative reviews if she ("her character") is seen eating in this restaurant?

Does she know why he asked her to leave? If so, is that knowledge relevant to her being happy about it? Relevant how long she spent there before being asked to leave? Before actually leaving? Relevant what she did after leaving? What he did? Did he do something relevant (apart from obsessing over the show and her character) before asking her to leave? After? When the realization that made her happy hit her, was it due to something she saw? Read? Heard? Thought? Something that happened? Relevant where she was at that time? What she was doing? Where the witer was at that time? What he was doing?

Had they relevantly interacted in any way before she was asked to leave? Only him and her are relevant people in the puzzle, correct? Does her thought process involve: remembering something? Deducing something?

Was there any other relevant conversation between the actor and the waiter before he told her to leave?
Is there a reason why she should leave within a few hours? (and not right now) Did the waiter ask her something else besides to leave? Should she do something before she leaves?
Did the waiter's request hint that he has some knowledge about the show? about her role? about the plot?

Had they previously interacted in some other way? If so, two-way interaction? One-way? Had he sent her hatemail? In some other way expressed his dislike for her character? For her? Did she deduce that the waiter was the same person from an earlier interaction?

Sundowner

Was there any other relevant conversation between the actor and the waiter before he told her to leave? No
Is there a reason why she should leave within a few hours? FA here - she was told to leave right away, but only got happy a few hours later
(and not right now) Did the waiter ask her something else besides to leave? Should she do something before she leaves?
Did the waiter's request hint that he has some knowledge about the show? about her role? about the plot? No/irrel to rest

The only relevant "interaction" (if you want to call it this) is that he was obsessively watching the show and deeply hated her character

We've been beating around the bush for a while. The focus should be more on the actress' thoughts/feelings

When first asked to leave, does she feel annoyed? Bewildered? Does she deduce that the waiter disliked her character and not her, personally? Did the waiter say something relevant when he asked her to leave?

When first asked to leave, does she feel annoyed? Bewildered? Could be either, not that relevant
Does she deduce that the waiter disliked her character and not her, personally? This is OTRT, but why was she happy about it?
Did the waiter say something relevant when he asked her to leave? No

Does she harbor other relevant feelings about her role? Her fans? Her fame? Her talent? Does she want to be famous? To be recognized? Are future prospects relevant? Does she relevantly intend to make this incident known to anyone?

Does she harbor other relevant feelings about her role? Her fans? Her fame? Her talent? Yes to all
Does she want to be famous? To be recognized? Are future prospects relevant? Yes to all
Does she relevantly intend to make this incident known to anyone? No

I think I can declare this puzzle solved.

SPOILER

Charlene is a young actress who has just landed her first major role: A particularly villainous character in a daily soap.
When she is denied service in a restaurant, she is at first confused about it.
But later she realizes it must be because of her role, and that she must be playing the villainess really convincingly in order to be despised in person by a fan of the show,
and that she has now actually made it as a celebrity actress.

Congratulations to GalFisk, thanks everyone for playing!
