Did you make the joke more elaborate for the sake of accuracy, and this is what made it cost more? whereas someone who didn't know some slightly obscure fact about Selassie would likely have made the joke in a simpler way but that was "incorrect" in some sense?

Relevant? Big Yope - on the one hand, this could have happened via a lot of communication methods (or even outside the Internet). But then, finding out the communication method that happened to be used would provide you with a big hint.
Is one other person relevant? Two? More? Hard to answer - the "relevant people" are the recipients of the joke, and the number of them can range from two to a few dozen, depending on details I don't actually know. I wouldn't recommend following this track.

You said that you answered the first question wrong in order to set up the joke, but also that you didn't know the second question (the one about Haile Selassie) until you had answered the first question. Is this all correct? If so, did you intentionally answer the first question wrongly? Did you intentionally answer the first question in order to set up a joke? Or did it occur to you that it was a good setup once you got the second question? Or did both happen - your first answer was a joke, and your second answer added to that joke?
