[Tiger] Only the Spider

Postby Tiger » Wed Feb 11, 2015 4:41 pm

My shift at work is from 12:00 - 8:00. Why do I come in at 9:00 AM?

I = Tiger, time zones not relevant.

Do you come in at 9 every day, or just on certain days?
Is it relevant where you do your work? Do you work from home, for example? but have to go to e.g. an office for supplies?

Do you leave again before your shift starts? When you come in at 9, do you: meet/speak to someone relevant? Do something relevant? Go somewhere relevant? Do any actual work? Check something? I myself come in at 7 while my shift starts at 9, becuase my girlfriend starts at 7 and I think it's a waste of gas to go home again for that short a while - is something like this relevant? Relevant how you get to work? Relevant how far away you live form work? Relevant how long it takes you to get to work? Or how much it costs you? Do you use a specific facility at your work before your shift starts? Such as a gym?

I myself come in at 7 while my shift starts at 9, becuase my girlfriend starts at 7 and I think it's a waste of gas to go home again for that short a while - is something like this relevant? No, but that sounds very much like a lateral puzzle to me.

So you're going to work early so you can piggyback on their network... but three hours early. Are you taking an online class? Is what you're doing private? Do you not want others to be aware of it? If so, family members? coworkers?

Also, what's latency?

Are you troubleshooting a problem? No. Testing something? No. Load testing/stress testing? No. Visiting websites? No. One specific website? No. Using FTP? No. Doing something illegal? No!!! Is your computer the only device on the wireless network at the time? Not likely. Relevant? No. Does your employer approve? Disapprove? Not care? Not know? This one. Relevant? Somewhat.

So you're going to work early so you can piggyback on their network... but three hours early. Are you taking an online class? No. Is what you're doing private? Not really. Do you not want others to be aware of it? Yes. If so, family members? coworkers? This one/my boss.

Also, what's latency? Latency, sometimes called 'ping' is the delay between your computer sending data to a server and whatever action want carried out to take place (ideally, you would want low latency to have little to no delay). I use the internet at work because the internet is faster, and therefore, latency is lower, which is important for what I do in the mornings.

Is your activity temporary? Or have you been doing this since you started working there and will be doing this as long as you work there?
If your boss knew about your activity, would he approve? Disapprove?
Do you communicate with someone who is only available from 9 to 12? Do you search for another job? Do you play an online game?

Are you in a competition? Chatting? LTPFing? Doing science? Collaborating with others? Are you actively doing something on the computer? Or do you set it up and let it run by itself? Stock trading relevant? Other trading?

Is your activity temporary? Or have you been doing this since you started working there and will be doing this as long as you work there? I hope that I'll eventually have better internet at home.
If your boss knew about your activity, would he approve? Disapprove? Possibly disapprove but probably won't care as long as I'm not doing it during work hours.
Do you communicate with someone who is only available from 9 to 12? Do you search for another job?
Do you play an online game? This one! That's enough for a...

I play an online game wherein reaction speed, etc. are critical. Having a bad internet connection makes me lag, and unfortunately, my internet speeds at home and my college dorm are abysmal. In order for me to keep up my hobby, I have to play at work, so I come in early to play.

Thanks to everyone who played!
