A unit of the Indian Army (mostly Muslim and Sikh) was taken prisoner during WWII. Due to their religion, their captors (who would have been mostly Catholic) released them voluntarily to return to India and rejoin the Indian Army. Their diet is relevant, but their personal appearance and religious icons and other elements are not. The diet's relevance has nothing to do with survival methods.

The 11th Indian Cavalry, Prince Albert Victor's Own or PAVO, was captured entire by the Italians during WWII in North Africa. Although its British officers were separated and sent to the rear, the Indian warrant officers left in command talked their captors into releasing the regiment because their religious dietary requirements could not be met in an Italian prison camp. They marched back to British lines in exchange for giving their parole not to fight in the North African theater again, and later served in Burma.
