Is the question something like: "May I speak to Sarah, please?" "Can I speak to the man of the house?" (shudder) "Is your parent around?" "Can I talk to you about [x]?" "Can I confirm [some bit of personal information, such as address, SIN/SSN, phone number called...]?" (Technically, I think this would still be a yes/no question.)
Is Sarah's age relevant? Is her gender relevant? Her profession? Is there something about her that would make the question stupid/pointless/redundant coming from someone who knew her?
Would her answer to the question be yes? No?
I'm trying to think of how to ask this concisely so it makes sense...is it just because we have cell phones now and not landlines, and most people are unlisted, so anyone calling should either be someone we know or someone we've given our contact info to for some reason, so if an unknown number calls and doesn't identify themselves immediately and explain their connection to us, we just hang up on them? All of this is more or less correct, so...
