Hakim waits in a small room until he hears a noise. Less than a minute later, he leaves. He does not leave anything in the room and does not take anything from it, and he gains no benefit from this, so why does he do this?

Solution is my incorrect PM to Balin's uncannily similar puzzle. No caveat.

He had got into the lift, then quickly realised he didn't need to (he had forgotten to bring something/misremembered where a meeting was/suddenly realised an appointment was cancelled - take your pick), but the lift was already in motion and he had to wait until the lift had stopped at all its scheduled floors. He hears the bell as it reaches his floor and gets out.
