Is there something relevant (other than the passage through the door, and the conversation with the friends later) that occurred on the days you pretended to have seen a jogger? such as forgetting your card key?

I'm thinking maybe you didn't have the card with you, but people didn't believe that because they knew you had passed through the door--so you said that after the last person had gone through, a jogger happened to come by and grab it before it locked? whereas in reality someone had propped it open with an object, or people had been opening it when they weren't supposed to? I know we've had things like this at my workplace since the pandemic, they're really trying to control who goes in which day, and so they really stress that nobody ought to let people walk around them through the door or otherwise keep the door open to circumvent swiping in with our cards.

I was friends with a couple that lived in a well-secured (well, theoretically) apartment building. Whenever I visited, I used a pedestrian side entrance that had an ID card lock, like all the other entrances, but this one was usually propped open so that people could quickly step out when needed.

I wasn't the least bit concerned about the security risks of this practice, given that it was a gated community, a very nice neighborhood, and there were locks on all the apartment doors anyway. But I knew my friends were a bit more cautious about such things, as evidenced by their choice of residence. So if they ever expressed surprise that I got in the building without them coming down to let me in, I always said that I had just passed a jogger who was going out, and who held open the door for me. Somehow they never grew suspicious about this ever-present jogger.
