[WiZ] Untitled (Track 11)

Postby WiZ » Tue Jun 15, 2021 11:47 pm

A song is recorded. People love the song and a lot of interested people listen. However, the song is incomplete and includes many awkward silences. But no attempt is ever made to finish the song. Why not?

True story. Caveat earlispoilor. OAATP rulz, ok

Was there only one song writer?
Was the song ever finished?
Did the song writer die long before this recording of the song? (decades, centuries before?)
Was it the first time the song was recorded?
Yopeishly intentional silence = also because no one was able or wanted to complete the missing parts?
Silence = no singing? no music?
Were parts that have been there before omitted during the recording of the song?

Doriana

Does someone die while the song is being recorded? no

Sundowner

Was there only one song writer? yes

Rest of questions ignored as per OAATP rules - I admittedly didn't make these as clear as I could have, so I will waive the usual probation penalty :P

Peter

I'm guessing i'm one of the few to understand the puzzle title :D I had to do a bit of Google Fu to find its official name - I just remember looking at my CD of Green and seeing the number 11 with nothing after it

Is the song an amalgamation of other songs? no

Trebor

SunDowner

Mimino

Was the song writer also the singer who would have performed the song had he been still alive? yes

(By the way: were you with the puzzle title inspired by the title of another puzzle here in this forum?) Indeed it was - but there is a tradition of using REM songs as puzzle titles that dates back to the previous forum. Peter, Balin and I are repeat offenders.

I'm confused. I got a "yes, FA lurking" when I asked whether one of the song's writers died before completing the song. Later we figured out that there was only one songwriter, which I assume was the FA. Which would imply to me that that songwriter died. But we got a no when we asked if that's what happened.

Did the singer die? Or was it a duet, and one of the singers died? Is the death the relevant event we keep skirting around? If not, is it a political event? Cultural event? The invention of something? The composition of another piece of music? Another work of art? Is the audience supposed to do something percussive in this part, without instrumentation from the musicians? (Perhaps the stomp-stomp-clap on "We Will Rock You"?)

Apologies for any confusion - there is definite nuance here, and I'm trying to walk the line between not giving too much away and not giving misleading answers. Hopefully, your next round will iron some of this out.

Did the singer die? yes, but this in itself was not the reason the song was never completed Or was it a duet, and one of the singers died? Yes, very good Is the death the relevant event we keep skirting around? yes If not, is it a political event? Cultural event? The invention of something? The composition of another piece of music? Another work of art? no to these Is the audience supposed to do something percussive in this part no, without instrumentation from the musicians? (Perhaps the stomp-stomp-clap on "We Will Rock You"?)

So, I hope that makes things clearer. But why not replace the intended duettist with someone else? And why record one part (and leave it indefinitely for people to listen to) if the duettist is dead?

Did the surviving singer, nevertheless, want to record the song? so they decided finally to do it while omitting/skipping the other singer's part?
Was it a last wish of the deceased singer that the song is recorded?
Is the cause of death of the singer relevant? did he know that he is going to die when he was writing the song?

I'm somewhat lost now. A while ago we said the deceased was a male human solo singer and also the writer of the song. Now it's a female animal and duettist and most likely did also not write the song.

Was the song ever written by someone? by a human? is the song writer still alive? is the song writer one of the intended duettists?
Is the other duettist (i.e. not the deceased animal) still alive? is he/she human?

WAG: Was it a recording of whales singing?

I'm somewhat lost now. A while ago we said the deceased was a male human solo singer and also the writer of the song. Now it's a female animal and duettist and most likely did also not write the song.

Clarification: The recording is of a male solo singer, whose humanity was never discussed or questioned. They are the writer of the song (such as it is, as per the recording), inasmuch as it is their own composition and nobody else's. The female animal duettist had no part in writing the song, such as it is.

Was the song ever written by someone? yes by a human? no is the song writer still alive? the writer of part of the song that exists and has been recorded is not relevantly alive or dead (likely dead by now) is the song writer one of the intended duettists? yes
Is the other duettist (i.e. not the deceased animal) still alive? very much not is he/she human? no

WAG: Was it a recording of whales singing? Close. It is a recording of an animal singing to another animal, but not whales.

Was the singing of the male bird recorded? Was the female bird already dead at this moment? Were those who recorded the singing aware of that? was the male bord aware?
Did the moments of silence come from the male bird waiting for the female's response?
Did he increase his efforts because no response was coming?
Relevant which species of bird?

***** SPOILER *****

The song was a recording of the last Kaua’i Oo bird singing before it went extinct. It was a mating call sung by a male bird. The song has breaks for the female bird to respond. There’s no response because the male Kaua’i Oo is the last of its kind.

This is the recording

Congratulations, Mimino, on the solution, and thank you all for playing.
