'I hate walking past that house,' said Frank. 'Why?' asked Val, 'It seems fine to me.'

If the protagonists are Frank and Val, is the house a Four Seasons?

Sorry.

Does Frank know something about the house that Val does not? Do they both see the house in the same way? Are they approaching it in a similar fashion?

Is the purpose or setting of the house relevant? Is the reason for/circumstances under which they pass the house important?

Is the hate spawned by fear? Anger? Regret? Apprehension? Sorrow? A memory? It the house the source of the hate? The street/road/path? Something else? Would Frank hate bicycling past it? Driving? Running? Is it a home? Store? Office? Is the constitution of the building relevant? Looks? Was something relevantly destroyed to make room for the building?

Is it a real, tangible house? where people live in?
Is it Frank's house? Val's? or did any of them live in this house before?
Relevant what comes after the house?
As Frank would not have any concerns to drive past this house, would sitting in a car protect him in a way? from being seen?

Would sitting in a car protect him from hearing something? Seeing something? Smelling something? Being physically impacted in some way? Having to take some action?

Does Frank feel physically imperiled by the house? Do the occupants do something the occupants do that makes walking past treacherous? Is the house’s position on the lot relevant?

I’m thinking that when you answered earlier that the house itself was the source of hate, that rules out anything to do with the yard, occupants, etc. Correct?

If Frank had said this to someone other than Val, would the response be the same? Is there something about Frank that gives him more reason to hate this house? Something about Val that does the opposite?

Is Frank’s profession relevant? Is he a mail carrier? Is Val’s profession relevant?

Does Frank usually walk past the house by himself? With a pet? With another person?

Is the relationship between Frank and Val relevant?

Would he have no concerns to drive past the house because the driving lane is at a bigger distance to the house?
Is he simply afraid from getting to close to the house? Did he think coming too close to the house would put him in real physical danger? Did he think the house might collapse?
Would he walk past the house as part of his profession?
But driving down the road would mean he is not on duty? and thus, safe?

Would Frank hear something when he walks past the house? noise emerging from the house? occupants saying something to him? yelling at him?
Would Val hear the same? when she walks with Frank past the house? when alone?
if not: because it would not happen then? or because she is deaf?
Is Frank usually with Val when he walks past the house? with someone else? with a relative? with a kid?
Is Val Frank's daughter? wife? sister? mother? other relative?

Is Frank a child? Does the house somehow emit a noise that is bothersome to Frank but Val's hearing (as it is for all adults) is less sensitive to the volume or frequency?

If so, anything to do with electricity? Electronics? Dog whistles?

CLOSE ENOUGH

Frank is Val's young son (and my grandson). When they walk past this house he hears a very high frequency noise which the occupiers use to deter animals. Val, along with most adults, cannot hear it.

Ah yes, we have one of those noise makers down the side of our church to deter groups of youngsters gathering - usually taking drugs. I've never heard it but my daughter could (mid thirties).
