When I found out my number, I wasn't surprised. But when I learnt how the numbers were assigned, I felt both proud and embarrassed.

Were the numbers assigned purposefully? randomly? according to alphabetic order? some other pre-defined order?

Last summer, I joined a local lacrosse league that I saw advertised on instagram. When we got our jerseys on the first day and my jersey number was #1, I wasn’t too surprised - I thought jersey numbers were assigned alphabetically (my last name starts with an A) or by position. When I found out that numbers reflected the order in which people signed up for the league, I felt proud to be the first ever member, but also embarrassed because of how much time I spend on
IG.
