[Bardificer] Haberdasher

Postby Bardificer » Sun Feb 20, 2022 8:54 pm

Zaid typically pays a lot of attention to his appearance and attire, and wears variety of tailor-made, expensive, tasteful suits to work. For two months, Zaid begins wearing the same plain, black suit to work everyday, one he bought off-the-rack and that doesn't fit him particularly well. Then he returns to his normal natty attire. Nothing about his job duties or his taste in clothing changed during this time, so why the switch?

Zaid=he=him=his

Did he do this in response to a person? Group? Company? Animal? Something happening at his work? Home? Commute? Did he enjoy making this temporary change? Relevantly not enjoy it? Relevant what happens to his good suits during this time?

Is his job relevant at all?

Is he in a cast /orthopedic boot / sling for two months and his other suits don't fit over it?

Does he have access to his regular attire during these two months? Has he gone on a trip and his luggage went missing? Is he trying to disguise himself? To blend in better?

Does Zaid enjoy being natty? Would he rather be the way he was for two months? Does he go to his regular workplace for those two months?

Anything to do with death/s or funeral/s?
Is he trying to create a certain impression? Is he being thoughtful, e.g. another person might feel better? Would another person have a different opinion of him? Anything dodgy going on, e.g. a crime or untruth? Was it exactly 2 months? Relevant which months? Relevantly starting the 2 months on the 1st and ending on the 28/29/30/31st? How many other employees are there, and is he self employed?

doriana_

Is his job relevant at all? Yes, but not what specific job he has.

Is he in a cast /orthopedic boot / sling for two months and his other suits don't fit over it? No.

trebor2

Does he have access to his regular attire during these two months? Yes. Has he gone on a trip and his luggage went missing? No. Is he trying to disguise himself? No. To blend in better? No.

Does Zaid enjoy being natty? Assume yes. Would he rather be the way he was for two months? No. Does he go to his regular workplace for those two months? Yes.

Sarisberie Hi, welcome to the forum!

Anything to do with death/s or funeral/s? No.

Is he trying to create a certain impression? Noish. Is he being thoughtful, e.g. another person might feel better? Yes, I'd say so. Would another person have a different opinion of him? Possibly, not necessarily. Anything dodgy going on, e.g. a crime or untruth? I'll say possibly.
Was it exactly 2 months? Could have been a bit longer or shorter. Relevant which months? No. Relevantly starting the 2 months on the 1st and ending on the 28/29/30/31st? No.
How many other employees are there, Not super relevant, at least a few. and is he self employed? No.

Hi, and thanks Bardificer!

Is it relevant what kind of establishment it is? Clothing company? Do any other employees normally wear natty clothes similar to Zaid's customary attire?
Is anyone else, besides Zaid, wearing a black suit or similar, such as a new employee? If so, does the new employee only have a black suit to wear?
Is Zaid wearing the black suit in solidarity, or so the other person doesn't stand out perhaps? Is two months the time it takes for the other person (if any) to acquire natty attire? Some kind of impersonation going on? Weight or size relevant? Is there a rule or requirement which is being broken?
Has Zaid loaned anyone his usual clothes? Is two months the time it takes for the other person (if any) to acquire natty attire? Some kind of impersonation going on?

Are customers of his workplace relevant? No. Bosses? Yes. colleagues? Yes. Does he mainly want the boring attire to be seen? Yope. the fine attire to not be seen? No.

Did the other person dress: nicer than nice Zaid? The same as nice Zaid? Nicer than plain Zaid? The same as plain Zaid? Worse than plain Zaid? Did the other person change their dress style also? Did Zaid do this out of sympathy? Companionship? In order not to overshadow someone? In order not to be mistaken for someone else? Is the other person a colleague? Subordinate? Superior? Friend? Was he asked to do this? Did he volunteer to do this? Did the other person know he was going to do this? Did the other person appreciate what he did? Was something relevant happening at the workplace during this period? Outside work? In the other person's private life? Can we call the other person Aaron? Is the other person HAM?

Hi, and thanks Bardificer! Sure! Sorry for skipping these questions, I'm not sure how I missed them.

Is it relevant what kind of establishment it is? Not really, could be many professions. Clothing company? No. Do any other employees normally wear natty clothes similar to Zaid's customary attire? Not relevantly.
Is anyone else, besides Zaid, wearing a black suit or similar, such as a new employee? Not a black suit, but something similar, yes. Not necessarily a new employee. If so, does the new employee only have a black suit to wear? Irr.
Is Zaid wearing the black suit in solidarity, This is very OTRT (on the right track). or so the other person doesn't stand out perhaps? Not for this reason exactly. Is two months the time it takes for the other person (if any) to acquire natty attire? Irr. Some kind of impersonation going on? No. Weight or size relevant? No. Is there a rule or requirement which is being broken? No, but this is a somewhat relvant question.
Has Zaid loaned anyone his usual clothes? No.

GalFisk

Did the other person dress: nicer than nice Zaid? The same as nice Zaid? Nicer than plain Zaid? The same as plain Zaid? Thisish, with a relevant difference. Worse than plain Zaid?
Did the other person change their dress style also? No. Did Zaid do this out of sympathy? Companionship? Along these lines, but for a spcific reason. In order not to overshadow someone? In order not to be mistaken for someone else? No to rest.
Is the other person a colleague? This. Subordinate? Superior? Friend? And likely this. Was he asked to do this? No. Did he volunteer to do this? Yes. Did the other person know he was going to do this? Irr, he could have told them or not. Did the other person appreciate what he did? Irr. Was something relevant happening at the workplace during this period? Not other than what has been established. Outside work? No. In the other person's private life? No. Can we call the other person Aaron? Might mislead, because... Is the other person HAM? HAF.

Does he relevantly work more closely with the woman during the time where he wears the plain suit? Does he want to make sure noone assumes she's his subordinate? That noone makes some other assumption about her? About him?

So Zaid and the woman are basically wearing the same gear at work? Minor differences = the woman's clothing is the female version of Zaid's black suit? Any other relevant minor diffs, perhaps a different colour? Or a poor fit/wrong size? Is Zaid's suit actually a woman's suit?
Is it relevant what the boss thinks about this situation? Is the woman being discriminated against by the boss, the other workers, the public? Is Zaid wearing his suit because the boss can't then complain about the woman? Is the boss sexist?

Irr, but for a long time I was picturing Zaid's 'natty attire' being a Hawaaian shirt ...

Does he relevantly work more closely with the woman during the time where he wears the plain suit? No.
Does he want to make sure noone assumes she's his subordinate? That noone makes some other assumption about her? About him? No to all.

Sarisberie

So Zaid and the woman are basically wearing the same gear at work? Not exactly. Minor differences = the woman's clothing is the female version of Zaid's black suit? No. Any other relevant minor diffs, perhaps a different colour? Same color, different outfit (this isn't super relevant but might help). Or a poor fit/wrong size? Not especially. Is Zaid's suit actually a woman's suit? No.

Is it relevant what the boss thinks about this situation? Yes. Is the woman being discriminated against by the boss, Possibly, and relevant. the other workers, the public? Is Zaid wearing his suit because the boss can't then complain about the woman? Not exactly, but OTRTish. Is the boss sexist? Possibly, explore.

Irr, but for a long time I was picturing Zaid's 'natty attire' being a Hawaaian shirt ... Maybe for casual Friday.

Are Zaid and the woman related? Twins? Are the staff all wearing uniforms?
Sexual Descrimination Act? Is it the woman who is causing the problem, or 'causing' it in the boss's eyes? Does the boss threaten her with demotion, dismissal etc if she doesn't comply? Is the woman wearing it because she has no other alternative? Because of her rank or age? Does the boss want the woman to wear revealing clothing, and she doesn't want to? Is he a letch? Are other employees (men, women, children) having to arbitrarily wear clothing to the boss's tastes? WAG - Is Zaid wearing clothing with his chest exposed? Are they waiters at 'Hooters' or some-such place whereby 'the goods' are on display? Does Zaid's black suit suggest he is the manager or siupervisor?

Is the boss treating her differently? Possibly--unknown at the time of the puzzle. Him differently? Wages relevant? Is he wearing the plain suit in order to make a statement? A point? Thisish--no to rest. A protest?

Sundowner64

Is the boss mocking her for wearing not the best outfit? Not exactly, but OTRT. does this imply that the woman earns less for the same work? No.

Sarisberie

Are Zaid and the woman related? Twins? Are the staff all wearing uniforms? Irr. to these.
Sexual Descrimination Act? Could become relevant--unknown at time of puzzle. Is it the woman who is causing the problem, or 'causing' it in the boss's eyes? Yesish. Does the boss threaten her with demotion, dismissal etc if she doesn't comply? Irr--possibly, but it likely wouldn't be this serious.
Is the woman wearing it because she has no other alternative? Because of her rank or age? Irr.
Does the boss want the woman to wear revealing clothing, and she doesn't want to? No. Is he a letch? No/irr. Are other employees (men, women, children) having to arbitrarily wear clothing to the boss's tastes? No.
WAG - Is Zaid wearing clothing with his chest exposed? Are they waiters at 'Hooters' or some-such place whereby 'the goods' are on display? No, but good WAG!
Does Zaid's black suit suggest he is the manager or siupervisor? No.

trebor2

Is there a dress code at their work? Not relevantly. Perhaps one that's sexist towards women? (or prejudicial against his friend?) but not towards other people, and Zaid is calling attention to this? It's not a code per se, but he is responding to something possibly prejudicial against her.

Did the boss or Zaid know the woman before she started working there? Is the woman connected to the boss or Zaid in any way? Is she the boss's ex or current partner, or Zaid's ex or current partner? Is it relevant when this took place, year, season etc
Is this an actual thing or scenario which took place, or just FYOI?
Is there a ranking system with uniforms? E.g. is the boss making the woman wear the 'lowest' category of uniform whereas she is more senior? Is he making her wear a uniform when none is required, or vice versa? Is Zaid dressing like the boss? Xcan't remember if I already asked, but is Zaid's current clothing relevantly ill-fitting, specifically?

Sorry if I've asked these questions already.

Are the woman's religious beliefs relevant? Her ethnicity? Her age? Sexual orientation? Is her position within the office relevant? Does she have a more front-facing position, and the boss expects her to dress in a way that is "more pleasing" to customers? Does the boss associate appearance with competence on the job when it comes to female employees?

Is something else about the woman's personal life relevant? Does she have a medical condition that would restrict the clothing she can wear? Is observing a period of mourning?

Does the woman, for whatever reason, dress in a way which is not pleasing to the boss, or which fails to 'tick all the boxes' inside his dumb head? Does he just like having someone around who he can put down?
Does the boss like 'putting down' this particular woman, new women, or women in general? Does his method of putting her down comprise of or include insulting her clothes?
Does Zaid wear his substandard suit to give the boss an alternative? To make a statement that he knows exactly what the boss ius up to? Once Zaid does this, would the boss no longer be able to criticise the woman? Or perhaps Zaid becomes the new focus for the boss's pettiness? Or the woman might feel better believing that she wasn't being singled out?

Is it correct that plain Zaid and the woman wear the same colour? And different suits? Does the woman wear a suit? Is it relevant what differences there are in their suits? Is the woman wearing a woman’s suit? Is Zaid wearing an off-the-rack suit to illustrate how ill-fitting clothing can be? Especially women’s off-the-rack stuff?

Does the woman, for whatever reason, dress in a way which is not pleasing to the boss, or which fails to 'tick all the boxes' inside his dumb head? More or less. Does he just like having someone around who he can put down? Possibly.
Does the boss like 'putting down' this particular woman, new women, or women in general? Does his method of putting her down comprise of or include insulting her clothes? Not a put-down per se, but could certainly feel insulting...
Does Zaid wear his substandard suit to give the boss an alternative? To make a statement that he knows exactly what the boss ius up to? Once Zaid does this, would the boss no longer be able to criticise the woman? this is the aim. Or perhaps Zaid becomes the new focus for the boss's pettiness? Or the woman might feel better believing that she wasn't being singled out?

Was the woman criticized for always wearing the same outfit? And Zaid wants to point out the double standard, so he decides to wear the same thing every day and see how it takes for anyone to notice? That's it exactly! Sorry for the long delay on this...

************************************SPOILER

This was a slight variation of this advice column letter where a woman was reprimanded at work for wearing the same plain black dress everyday (for sustainability, simplicity, and most importantly to complete a 100-day challenge and win a gift card). Given that she washed it regularly and wore different accessories, and there was no office dress code, it was hard to see what the problem was. It seemed pretty sexist, given that men in the office--including her boss!--would wear the same suits all the time.

In my version, I imagine Zaid as a co-worker and ally who, after she is reprimanded, decides to wear the same plain black suit everyday and see how long it took for the boss to notice. After a couple of months of going incognito, he presents this counter-evidence to the boss, then happily goes back to his more varied wardrobe.

Indeed, yes, good point.
(I'm glad to work in a company where most women are wearing jeans.)
