[Sarisberie] Go Driving

Postby Sarisberie » Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:47 am

Ayrton starts his own driving school, GO DRIVING. He needs a logo for the sign on the roof of his car. He finds a famous graphic which would be ideal, but he has to change something fundamental so as not to suggest going backwards.

"Suggest going backwards" in the sense of implying that the car that the logo was on was literally driving in reverse? in the sense of suggesting that previously gained progress in something (for example, driving skills) would be lost/undone?

Did the graphic include text? an image of a recognizable object(s)? abstract shapes or symbols?

Is the specific name "Go Driving" relevant? Is the fact that "driving" is also something done in golf relevant?

Is the sign placed vertically? Lengthwise? does it have the logo on both sides? Which means the logo is facing in opposite directions on each side? Does it contain a directional element? A vehicle? Did he need to get another version of the logo for the other side of the sign, so that the directional element would face forwards on both sides?

Is the graphic already a logo? Is it owned by a company? Public domain? Does it involve arrows? Swooshes? Clouds, like after the Roadrunner in cartoons? Is the recognizable object a representation of something that existed in reality before this graphic was made? Is it a representation of a famous landmark? Geographical feature?

Does he intend to include the text in his logo? Is the text famous? If so, because of the graphic?

Come to think of it, are Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote relevant? Is wordplay in "Go Driving" relevant? Relevant that it could be read as God Riving?

Here's a picture of the kind of sign. The logo would go on the left when viewed from the front, where the crooked 'L' is on this graphic.

I was wondering if the part of the graphic that was a recognizable object was something like, y'know, the Statue of Liberty, or Big Ben, or whatever, where it already existed IRL and was capitalized on for the purpose of the graphic. Kind of how Liberty Mutual does for their logo, for example.

Is the original context for the text: the graphic? As in, is the text a phrase/slogan created for this graphic? Is it a famous quote? Is it from a speech? Ad campaign? Movie? Play? TV show? Song? Piece of literature? From an interview?

Is the graphic owned by Nike? Amazon? Sprint? A North American company? South American? European? Asian? African? Company from Oceania? Was it created by/for the company that owns it? If not, was it already famous when the company bought it? Is it relevant what this other company sells?

If he didn't change the logo, would it make it look like the sign said something other than Go Driving? Would it appear to add letters to his company name? Would it make it look like "Go Driving" was traveling backwards? (Arrows pointing the wrong way, or something like that?)

As for the wordplay in "Go Driving", we've already established it doesn't involve "driving" in golf... does it relate to disk drives? driving in some kind of fastener (like a screw or nail)?

Before the graphic was owned by its current company, was it used by another company? if so, one selling the same general type of product? or alternatively, was it in the public domain? used by an organization other than a for-profit company?

Is the graphic owned by an auto company? Car rental company? Company that has anything to do with automotives? Travel? Adults only stuff? (Go Driving would certainly mean something different in that instance, ha ha.) Does the company make a product? Sell a service? Are they involved in: leisure/entertainment? Furniture? Food? Hospitality?

Is the word "go" relevant to the wordplay? "Driving"? was ir originally "go [something else]"? "[something else] driving"? Does "go driving" rhyme with the original? Is the original in the public domain? Expired? Otherwise free to use? Non-free, but he has permission? Non-free, but it's fair/exempted/allowed use? Non-free, but he doesn't care? Relevant?

(Amazing what going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole, off of a tidbit from a Sporcle quiz, can get you to, where five articles in from looking at an intial article about the largest malls in North America you wind up at an entry for Fast Retailing, a Japanese multinational whose multinational whose logo is a bunch of arrows.)

Would the fundamental change involve changing the direction of the arrows? Removing the arrows? Removing text from the original graphic? Removing the other recognizable image from the graphic? Changing the font of something? If the logo were to be fundamentally changed, would that be allowed because: it would then be distinguishable from the original? no one would reasonably think it resembled the original at all? Because you could make an argument that it was changed to something so ubiquitous that even if it did infringe on copyright it would be ludicrous to enforce that? (Sorry if this isn't clear. An example would be like how some musicians/labels have tried to copyright chord progressions - copying a melody and instrumentation note for note is one thing, but thousands of songs use the same chord progressions, at least for parts of them.)

Is the word "Go" part of the other company's name? Is it associated with them somehow? Part of their slogan? Is an antonym of go relevant? A synonym?

Does the wordplay involve only the text in "Go Driving"? Does it involve something in the graphic as well? A slogan from the other company? Does it play on viewers knowing what company the other graphic is from? Does it involve the image in the graphic?

Does the other company deal in clothing? Household goods? Do they sell something that a person would usually use at home? Electronics/tech? Lateral thinking puzzle books?

About the lurking FA:
The company does not sell tangible items? just intangible items? services? subscriptions?
The company does not sell anything?
Is the arrow in the original logo going from right to left? from left to right? upwards? downwards? diagonal?
Did the original logo contain text? pictograms? other elements?
Was the direction of the arrow changed by 90 degrees? 180 degrees? 270 degrees? otherwise?
Would the arrow have pointed in backward direction when a sign with the original logo had been mounted on the car?

***************************************$POILER***************************************************

Ayrton decides that the Monopoly GO square will be ideal for the logo of his new driving school, "GO Driving". The arrow on the original graphic points left. He's not keen on that, because he thinks that it might subliminally give the wrong impression - that of progress being reversed or lost. He's also aware that the graphic might infringe copyright, but figures the adapted one won't.

Well done to Biograd1 for the solve, and thanks to GalFisk, trebor2, and Sundowner64 for taking part.
