There is probably one thing about what we were doing (other than puzzling) at the time that also made him think of the real-life scenario, in a very broad sense. If this isn't discovered shortly, I will $poyle.

My dad and I were on the highway for a few hours, and were passing some time by making up lateral thinking puzzles for each other. I don't remember how he posed this one, but the solution involved someone being shot by a cop while the cop had them pulled over. It was spurred by the fact that we were driving but more so by recent events in the news - one case in particular that I don't remember the details of now. All I know was I was so far off-base and he had done such a good job of framing the puzzle that I didn't even know that cars, cops, death, or shootings were even involved. I was still trying to make any headway when he started crying, thinking about the real-life event(s) the puzzle was based on. As I hadn't figured out yet it was about anything topical and was asking questions that had nothing to do with anything serious, I was rather confused until he spoyled it for me.

The puzzle title is an anagram of "Paul Sloane and Des MacHale". I liked the way it also sounded like a warning sign one might see on the road.
