This puzzle is about skydiving.

I thought that rather than giving you the puzzle statement, it could be fun to start with only the answer to the question I'm frequently asked in my puzzles. Ask further questions as normal to figure out the situation. No special skydiving knowledge is needed.

- Are they on the ground? If so, are they in the aircraft? In the hangar? Outdoors? Preparing to board? Engines on? Taxiing? On runway? Type of aircraft relevant? If so single-engine? Multi?
- If in the air, just after takeoff? During the climb? cruise to the jumping point? On "final approach?" Over the dropzone? Altitude relevant?
- Is everyone ready to jump? Hooked up to static lines? Checking each other?

(My only knowledge of parachuting is mostly what I've gleaned reading military history and watching The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far...)

Good movies, but while sports skydiving gained popularity using WWII surplus, it's now a bit further evolved. That's actually irrelevant to the puzzle though.

Are they afraid of lightning? If so, is the act of opening the hatch and thus exposing the aircraft and passengers relevant, as otherwise a lightning strike would "circle" the craft without discharging?

No to all. It's not important why they decided not to jump. Assume that it got too cloudy, or started to rain.

SPOILER:
Experienced skydivers aren't afraid of flying, or jumping. But we're still uneasy about landing with an airplane, because we almost never experience that.
