[Bardificer] That means you do care

Postby Bardificer » Sun Jan 09, 2022 4:05 pm

Kailey, Jenna and George are discussing pets.
George say something that makes Kailey roll her eyes, thinking that he just made a dumb error.
Jenna thinks something much worse about him.
What did he say?

Did he use a double negative? Or (from Kailey's perspective) try to use one but flubbed it? Was he saying something about a pet? His pet? More than one pet? Are Kailey, Jenna and George HA? Did Jenna also think he made an error? Or that he confessed something? Tried to hint at something? Does she think he: kills? Tortures? Neglects? Does something bad to/with pets? Other humans? Objects? Abstract conceps? Such as money?

Did he use a double negative? No. Or (from Kailey's perspective) try to use one but flubbed it? No, but OTRTish. Was he saying something about a pet? Yes. His pet? Yes. More than one pet? No. Are Kailey, Jenna and George HA? Yes.
Did Jenna also think he made an error? No. Or that he confessed something? Essentially, yes. Tried to hint at something? Yesish. Does she think he: kills? Tortures? This. Neglects? Does something bad to/with pets? to his pet, yes. Other humans? Objects? Abstract conceps? Such as money? No to rest.

Relevant what pet he has? If so: dog? Cat? Bird? Fish? Reptile? Primate? Livestock?
Relevant what he actually meant to say? How he actually treats his pet?
Is the inferred torture related to a relevant thing/activity he could do with/to his pet? If so: feeding? Watering? Grooming? Cleaning? Cuddling? Playing? Training? Restraining? Caging? Muzzling? Medicating? Punishing? Encouraging? Prohibiting? Spaying or neutering relevant? Mating/reproduction? Relevant what gender his pet is?

Edit: relevant that "pet" has more than one meaning?

Did George say something about what he is doing with his pet? about what his pet is doing?
Does George's statement refer to places where the pet is kept? to nutrition? vet care? grooming the pet?
Did Kailey misunderstand George's words? did Jenna?
Did George use a word in a different sense? or a word with double meaning? (like: kennel can mean dog house but also a fenced area in the backyard where a dog is kept)

Relevant what pet he has? Yes, one is most likely. If so: dog? This. Cat? Bird? Fish? Reptile? Primate? Livestock?
Relevant what he actually meant to say? Yes. How he actually treats his pet? A bit, yes.
Is the inferred torture related to a relevant thing/activity he could do with/to his pet? Yes. If so: feeding? This is somewhat relevant. Watering? Grooming? Cleaning? Cuddling? Playing? Training? This is involved. Restraining? Caging? Muzzling? Medicating? Punishing? And this. Encouraging? Prohibiting? Spaying or neutering relevant? Mating/reproduction? Relevant what gender his pet is? No to rest.

Edit: relevant that "pet" has more than one meaning? No, interesting thought.

Sundowner64

Did George say something about what he is doing with his pet? Yes. about what his pet is doing? Indirectly, yes.
Does George's statement refer to places where the pet is kept? to nutrition? In a vague sense. vet care? grooming the pet? No to rest.
Did Kailey misunderstand George's words? Yes. did Jenna? Yes.
Did George use a word in a different sense? I would say he used all his words in the normal, correct sense. or a word with double meaning? (like: kennel can mean dog house but also a fenced area in the backyard where a dog is kept) Noish.

Dog food relevant? Treats? Human food that dogs sometimes eats? Torture: hunger? Starvation? Inedible food? Unreachable but seeable or smellable food? Unhealthy (for dogs) food? Do they think the dog is allowed to eat something that makes it sick?

Relevant what language they're conversing in? Is it the first language for all of them? Is there a misunderstanding of an idiom?

Is it relevant what pets Kailey and Jenna have? Are any of these people romantically involved with each other?

Does this involve George's dog doing a trick?

Does this involve George's dog doing a trick? Yes.

In case it matters what trick it is... Sit? Stay? Come? Speak? Shake a paw? Roll over? Heel? Get me a beer from the fridge? (Someday, maybe. Someday.)

Relevant what breed of dog?

Is the treat a fruit? Vegetable? Something that we would think of as regular human food? That this dog sometimes eats? That other dogs wouldn't? (Trying to get at why it wasn't a clear yes to the question of whether this is human food that dogs sometimes eat.) Is it more commonly thought of as dog food? Food for another animal? Not thought of as food at all?

Is George saying he's using "carrot and stick" method to train his dog? Yes! Nice guess! And welcome. And Kailey thinks he's made an error because dogs don't really like carrots? No... And Jenna thinks he is physically abusing his dog (with a stick)? Yes.

You've got Jenna's misconception, now all that's left is: what did Kailey think he said incorrectly? His exact wording somewhat matters.

Did George mention that he's playing "stick and carrot" with his dog? Not exactly this, but he does name both. meaning that the dog fetches the stick and gets a carrot in reward? Fetching irr, but yes, the stick and carrot are both positives for the dog.

Is the dog in the habit of chewing the stick? Might this cause his mouth to bleed, or other negative effect? Is the carrot substituted for the stick? Does the dog fetch the stick, then George switches out the stick for the carrot, i.e. as a reward for fetching the stick? Presumably George wouldn't throw the carrot, because the dog would simply chew the carrot up rather than returning it? Training relevant? (Soz if these have been asked before).

Is the stick actually a chew stick? Yes. Did George mention that he "gives the dog the stick"? This idea, just not in those words. or when the dog does not like the carrot, he will get the stick? Not exactly, though this could be true.

Does Jenna think that 'get the carrot' means 'fetch the carrot' as opposed to 'receive the carrot as a reward'? But then, if the dog subsequently eats the carrot before bringing it back, Jenna thinks the dog 'gets the stick' as a punishment? Whereas maybe he just gets given the stick to play with for the rest of the time, rather than being rewarded with a fetched carrot? Are there multiple carrots?

But then, if the dog subsequently eats the carrot before bringing it back, Jenna thinks the dog 'gets the stick' as a punishment? This is possible, the relevant part of Jenna's misunderstanding is she thinks when George "uses the stick" he is hitting the dog.
Whereas maybe he just gets given the stick to play with for the rest of the time, rather than being rewarded with a fetched carrot? In actuality, the dog receives both sticks and carrots as rewards. Are there multiple carrots? Most likely, over time.

TINY HINT:

When describing his training method, George uses a particular word that makes Jenna think he's hitting his dog with a stick, while Kailey thinks he is using the word wrong, as people often do.

Is the problematic word synonymous to "use"? Does Jenna understand that it's a literal stick? Does Kailey? Is George actually telling them how he uses the stick as a reward? Is he playing fetch?

When you say people often do', do you mean that people often get this particular word wrong, or misuse it out of context?
Is the dog a whippet by any chance? 'Whip-it"? "Beat it" as in "run away, and fetch the stick again". "Take it" as in "take the stick" as opposed to "take the punishment"?

Is the problematic word synonymous to "use"? No. Does Jenna understand that it's a literal stick? Yes. Does Kailey? No, great question. Is George actually telling them how he uses the stick as a reward? No. Is he playing fetch? No.

Does she think he's using the word "literally" wrong? Does he say "I literally use the carrot and stick?"

Does she think he's using the word "literally" wrong? Does he say "I literally use the carrot and stick?" Exactly. Thank you for finishing this one off!

*******************************SPOILER

George says that he "literally has to use a carrot and a stick" to get his dog to do any tricks.
Kailey assumes he is using "literally" when he is in fact speaking figuratively, and rolls her eyes.
Jenna believes the "literally," and thinks he is withholding food from his dog and hitting it with a stick! :o

In reality, George's dog just likes chewing on both carrots and sticks, so he uses them as treats.
