[trebor2] Face It

Postby trebor2 » Sun Sep 11, 2022 6:53 pm

Why did one of my students recently tell me that a gelatinous army was going to take over a country?

Were you/they playing Dungeons & Dragons? Is what the said based in reality in any way, or fictional? Relevant that it was one of your students? What do you teach... relevant?

Did he/she actually mean to say that? or did he misunderstand something, like the definition of a word, a phrase in a foreign language, etc?

Did he have one particular country in mind? a real country? still existing today? if so: in America? Europe? Asia? Africa? Australia? Oceania?
Is it an army of humans (albeit fictional)? animals? robots?
Does "gelatinous" metaphorically stand for some quality of the army? like: sticky? soft? slow?
Is the subject you're teaching related to fiction? like: literature? writing? poetry? arts?
Were you discussing a piece of art? a work of that student?

Gelatinous: consisting of gelatine? Slimy? Squishy? Stretchy? Jiggly? Dessert-like? Candy-like? Sticky?
Army: military? Humans?
Country: a land area with defined borders and government?
Take over: invade? Infest? Seize power? Gain overwhelming popularity? Destroy? Flood? Gain high importance?
Relevant which country? An actual, existing country? The one you were in?

Biograd

Did he/she actually mean to say that? Yes. or did he misunderstand something, like the definition of a word, a phrase in a foreign language, etc?

Sundowner

Did he have one particular country in mind? Yes. a real country? Yes. still existing today? And yes. if so: in America? Europe? This.Asia? Africa? Australia? Oceania?
Is it an army of humans (albeit fictional)? animals? No to noish.robots? None of these.
Does "gelatinous" metaphorically stand for some quality of the army? No. like: sticky? soft? slow?
Is the subject you're teaching related to fiction? No. like: literature? writing? poetry? arts? But it is in the arts.
Were you discussing a piece of art? a work of that student? No to both.

Galfisk

Gelatinous: consisting of gelatine? Yuppers. Slimy? Squishy? Stretchy? Jiggly? Dessert-like? Candy-like? Sticky? Definitely squishy. And candy. Others are debatable.
Army: military? Well, not representing another country or anything. Humans? No.
Country: a land area with defined borders and government? Yes.
Take over: invade? Infest? Seize power? Gain overwhelming popularity? Destroy? This word is particularly important. Flood? Gain high importance?
Relevant which country? Yes. An actual, existing country? Yes. The one you were in? But no.

There are three countries that this would work with. I'm answering all questions based on the one she actually said.

Northern Europe? Southern? Western? Eastern? Central? Is the name of the country relevant? Is a specific gelatin product relevant? Is the country going to be destroyed because the volume of gelatin is large? Destroyed: having infrastructure broken? People killed? Nature ravaged? Everything buried in gelatin?

Sarisberie

Were the sweets 'jelly babies'? Yes, but they are called something different in North America. And this is relevant. Was there some kind of war game or enactment involving jelly babies as soldiers? No, but...

Galfisk

Northern Europe? Southern? Western? This. Eastern? Central? Is the name of the country relevant? Yes. Is a specific gelatin product relevant? Yes, the sweets Sarisberie uncovered. But for the relevant North American change. Is the country going to be destroyed because the volume of gelatin is large? Destroyed: having infrastructure broken? People killed? Nature ravaged? Everything buried in gelatin? Who knows? And irr.

CLARIFICATION/BLOOPER EDIT: amending the answer to an early question by Sundowner. They asked if this was an army of animals. Changing answer to no to noish.

So are/were an army of gummy bears about to take over France? As in a joke, or for real? Relevant what would happen if they did? Was gummy-bear mixture, or gummy bears themselves, perhaps poured down a drain, involved in a lorry crash, breeding etc? Is Macron partial to gummy bears? Was there a shortage of gelatin? Was the recipe going to be changed from gelatin to vegetarian, or vice versa?
ETA &BTW did you know you can get Gummybear Tetris?

Was the student's remark hypothetical, like "if .. happens then an army of gummy bears would invade France"?
Real gummy bears? or gummy bears standing metaphorically for something else?
Legislation about ingredients in gummy bears relevant? Did some ingredient become illegal in some country but was still legal in France? So that all gummy bears of old production were shipped to France?
French language relevant? any expression in French? was the student's remark in French? relevant?
Is the subject you're teaching related to: painting/drawing? graphics? photography? theatre? movie? tv? radio? creative design? architecture? history? philosophy? sociology? arts/culture in general?

A commercial jingle? Anything to do with the song "Today's the Day the Teddy Bears Have Their Picnic"?

Is the mnemonic a song teaching the capitals of Europe or similar?

Is the mnemonic a song teaching the capitals of Europe or similar? Nope. But do figure out what I teach.

A mnemonic for a series of notes or chords? I notice that "gummy", "bear", "army", and "France" begin with G, B, A, and F. So maybe a song had the sequence of notes GBACF and a student remembered it by the sentence "Gummy bear army conquers France"? Now come to think of it, if I remember FACE is itself a mnemonic for something to do with musical notes as well--if I recall the spaces between lines on a staff (because "face" rhymes with "space").

A mnemonic for a series of notes This! or chords? I notice that "gummy", "bear", "army", and "France" begin with G, B, A, and F. So maybe a song had the sequence of notes GBACF and a student remembered it by the sentence "Gummy bear army conquers France"? Now come to think of it, if I remember FACE is itself a mnemonic for something to do with musical notes as well--if I recall the spaces between lines on a staff (because "face" rhymes with "space"). Well done remembering that! The spaces on the treble clef are indeed for the notes F, A, C, and high E. This is all close enough for a

$POYLER.............

I teach piano lessons. One of my students is learning how to read notes on the treble clef (which is the twiddly one that looks kind of like a fancy G, for notes above middle C). The clef is comprised of lines and spaces. The bottom line is for E, the middle for G, then, B, D, and a high F. Instead of the old mnemonic that everybody used to learn ("Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge"), I think it's helpful for students to come up with their own. This particular student came up with "Evil Gummy Bears Destroy France". This led to a particularly fruitful discussion about what France had ever done to gummy bears, how an army of gummy bears would advance, how gummy bears turn evil, and how it probably wouldn't turn out well for the gummy bears as French people would just scoop them up and eat them. Maybe on baguettes.

Who says only boys deserve fudge anyway?
