Davy was a Welshman in the late 17th century. He had an alehouse, and kept a sow in a pigsty at the back. His wife sometimes slept in the straw cuddled up with the sow when she was extremely drunk. One night, he bet his customers that he had a 6-legged-sow. He duly showed his customers his ‘6-legged sow’ and won his bets. Thereafter, his wife was known as ‘Davy’s sow’, and the phrase, ‘As drunk as Davy’s sow’ came to mean ‘very drunk indeed’.
