[Doriana] It's a match

Postby doriana_ » Fri Oct 07, 2022 3:10 pm

Alan (H/A/M) is packing his bag for an important exam. He packs a couple of books, a notebook, some pens, a water bottle - and a box of matches. Why the matches?

Does he plan to cheat in the exam?
Might he need the matches during the exam? before? after?
Is it a written exam? oral? practical?
Is there anything else in the box besides the matches?
Relevant how many matches?

Would a book of paper matches work? A box of toothpicks? A box with one atch? An empty matchbox? A box with burnt matches? Were they strike-anywhere matches? Relevant? Does he plan to ignite any match? To rattle the box? To have it confiscated? To use it as a distraction? Does he think he wil score highly at the test? If so, by honest skill? Is the subject of the exam relevant? The location where it is taken? Other students relevant? People watching the studens relevant? Are all studens adult? Relevant?

Is he allowed to have the matches for the exam? Are other students (if any?) taking matches too? Are they clandestine matches? Was he told to bring matches, or did he decide to bring them himself? Are the matches to be used as matches, or as some other device, e.g. as part of a sculpture, puzzle, test, experiment etc?

Will he use the matches to count or measure something? to arrange into shapes/figures (if you don't get what I mean, see this: https://matchstickpuzzles.net/)? to mark something in the books?

He was not told to bring matches, but might the people giving the exam expect him to? Or expect him to bring something? Is he told to bring something, but can choose what it is?

Will he present the matches to a proctor during the exam? Will he light one? Light more than one? Will he set something else on fire?

Is this a test of survival skills? Is it a science test of any kind (chemistry, physics, etc.)? Is it a general IQ/aptitude test? Is it a test of manual dexterity?
WAG: does he have a hand injury or impairment, and they are testing his range of motion, so he wants to show he can now light a match?

Are the other items he is bringing going to be used for their typical purposes? Will he use any to interact with the matches, e.g., light the books on fire or put out a match with the water?

Does he intend to light something on fire with the matches? If so: bonfire? Cooking fire? Campfire? Torch? Candle? Lamp? Gas? Stove? Fireplace? Does he intend to light one fire with each match? Does he think he'll need several matched to achieve one fire? Will he light all the matches at once? One by one? Is the water bottle to drink from? To douse fire? Is he a student? A trainee?

Would he need the other items as well during the exam? the books? the notebook? the pens? the water?
Would he need the water for a purpose other than drinking? to put out a fire?
Notebook as in a book to take notes? or as in a portable computer?
Relevant that it's matches? or would any piece of wood of similar size do? (like toothpicks)
Is the exam related to sports?
WAG: Is it a driving exam?

Relevant that matches can catch fire? If so, from friction? Heat? Does he bring them in order to demonstrate the safety of something? By showing that it can't set off a match? Will anyone else light one of the matches? More than one? All of them? Are the chemicals in the match head of importance?

Are these relevantly normal sized matches? (I use 3" long ones for firelighting). Is he using matches to measure time?
Is it the chemicals in the match heads which are relevant here? Is he using them as a source or something he needs in his exam? Will there be a chemical reaction? Is he adding them to coffee? Or to purify water?

Relevant that matches can catch fire? Only insofar as you can light them intentionally If so, from friction? Heat? n/a Does he bring them in order to demonstrate the safety of something? By showing that it can't set off a match? No to these Will anyone else light one of the matches? More than one? All of them? Good question! Several people will each light one or more of the matches, but probably not all of them Are the chemicals in the match head of importance? No

Great round of questions because you discovered two key elements: Other people will light the matches and Alan uses them to measure time

Is the time from when a match is lit to when it can no longer be held relevant? Are other people competing? Being examined? examining him? Is the light from the matches relevant? The heat? will anyone get burned? Risk getting burned (apart from the risks normally inherent in lighting matches)? Will the people who light the matches also do something relevant simultaneously? Such as running? Balancing? Trying to extinguish someone else's match?

Are people working together? E.g. in teams, if so, how many people are in a team? Total number of people? Are the matches ONLY being used as a measure of time? Is this a chemistry exam? Other science? Do we need to explore the other items which Alan, and/or the others have? Are other people lighting the matches so that Alan doesn't have to? Relevant how many others there are, how many experiments, steps etc?

Is the time from when a match is lit to when it can no longer be held relevant? Yes, or the time it takes for the match to burn down completely when held upright Are other people competing? No Being examined? No examining him? Yes, but they're not the ones lighting the matches Is the light from the matches relevant? The heat? will anyone get burned? Risk getting burned (apart from the risks normally inherent in lighting matches)? No to these Will the people who light the matches also do something relevant simultaneously? Yes Such as running? Balancing? Trying to extinguish someone else's match? But none of these

Are people working together? Not relevantly E.g. in teams, if so, how many people are in a team? Total number of people? Around 25 Are the matches ONLY being used as a measure of time? Are matches used because: its simple? convenient? Other means of timing are unavailable? Impractical? Forbidden? Not invented yet? Does this happen in modern times? Outdoors? Indoors? Underground? In the light? In the dark?

Does any of the around 25 people light exactly one match? do they light them at the same time? one after the other?
Does Alan have to complete a task before a match has burned down? before all matches have burned down?
As no-one told Alan to bring matches, would he also have been able to take the exam when he did not bring matches? would they use other matches in that case? other methods of measuring time? would this have been a disadvantage for Alan?
Is the exam related to professional skills/craftsmanship? literacy? sports? save and rescue? survival?
Would passing the exam give Alan access to a profession? the permission to do something? a diploma/rank/title? the membership in a club? financial benefits?

Does any of the around 25 people light exactly one match? Possibly. Some might light none, some one, and some more than one do they light them at the same time? Relevantly not at the same time one after the other? Yes
Does Alan have to complete a task before a match has burned down? Not Alan, but... before all matches have burned down? No

Is the exam related to professional skills/craftsmanship? Yes to professional skills, no to craftsmanship literacy? sports? save and rescue? survival? No to rest
Would passing the exam give Alan access to a profession? Yes the permission to do something? Yes a diploma/rank/title? the membership in a club? No to these financial benefits? Only insofar as it will allow him to work in a certain profession

Might the examiner ask questions only as long as the match is burning?
Is Alan's profession related to: making tangible items? providing a service? government work? law enforcement? teaching or training? retailing? arts? science? food? restaurant?
Would Alan run his own business when he' will be working in that profession?
Does he need the notebook and the pen for taking notes? for drawing? is this also part of the exam?

Is Alan being examined? This Examining others? Is a student given a match to light, and can only ask questions while holding a lit match? Yes!

********SPOILER********
Alan is a trainee teacher and has to take a practical exam to earn his teaching qualification. To impress his examiners with his innovative teaching methods and to keep his students from asking long-winded questions (and thus messing up his lesson plan), he comes up with a simple trick: Students light a match before asking their questions and must be finished by the time the match burns down.
