[Doriana] Can't believe this happened 20 years ago

Postby doriana_ » Tue Jan 03, 2023 3:10 pm

How did my honesty result in me getting a worse grade?

Happy new year, puzzlers! This is a true story from 7th or 8th grade. The realization that this means the whole thing happened 20 years ago just hit me like a truck.

Happy new year!

Did you get the worse grade at school? Relevant which subject? Relevant which exact grade(s)?
Did you correct a teacher's mistake?

Did your honesty involve admitting to having not done some work? to having done some work late? to having collaborated with other students (or copied off of them) on work that you were supposed to do alone? to not knowing something? to having gotten what seemed like a correct answer for a wrong reason? or was it rather something more along the lines of admitting an opinion of something that was unfavorable (like "I hate this assignment")?

No to all or was it rather something more along the lines of admitting an opinion of something that was unfavorable (like "I hate this assignment")? But also not this

Is a test relevant? An assignment? A project? Did you get a worse grade because you were actually worse at the subject? Group work relevant? Pair work? Was the subject scientific in nature? Artistical? Athletic? Did you like it? Were you good at it?

Does "my honesty" mean you were honest? Or something else?

Was this 'whole thing' a protracted event or series of events? Did you have any choice in the subject or the method you took? Did you have any form of help or advice?

Was this in arts class? Did you paint, draw or craft something?

Would being dishonest make the project easier for you? Would you have turned in something else if you hadn't been honest?

If you had chosen a different subject, would things have turned out better/worse, whether in terms of your grade, or something else? Did you have some kind of knowledge, skill or other advantage? If so, generally or specific to this occasion? Perhaps a photo of the subject? Were you doing the same thing as the other artists?

So you first turned in the project, then were significantly honest, and got downgraded?

Did you take the project home? Did you get illicit help?

Just recalling my terrible needlework classes back at school...

Did you get a good grade in the first place, then you were honest in some way and got downgraded?
or did you get the low grade right away just because you were honest?
Did your act of honesty involve some interaction with the teacher?
Would the dishonest alternative have involved some sort of cheating during the project work? like: using tools, sources, materials that were not allowed? using someone's help? buying ready-made pieces rather than crafting them yourself? turning in the work after deadline with some fake excuse?
Did you report the teacher about someone else's behavior and got downgraded for being a sneak? :)

Do we need to know more about the artwork? Or could this have happened to any other project in arts class?

Some particular crafting method or material relevant?
Did the artwork relevantly break? Or didn't function?

Eek, pottery in Arts class was even worse than needlework…my Mom still has some of my Masterpieces on the windowsill

Was another of your projects relevant? Someone else‘s project? Did you have experience in pottery before?

Was this an act of you feeling that you needed to fess up to the teacher? Was it something that you said without thinking? Did you realize as you were saying it (or before) that your honestly would result in your grade being lowered?

Did you have to create a goal for the project, against which you would be graded? And so when you were honest you conveyed that you'd initially set a loftier goal than what the teacher had thought?

Was the downgrading a punishment for being honest? Was it meant to reflect what the teacher actually thought of your project?

Did your being honest convey to the teacher that you should've done better than you actually did? That you had a skill set that gave you an unfair advantage? That you had a kiln or something at home that gave you an unfair advantage?

When I was in about Grade 2 or so I made a nativity set that I knew wasn't going to turn out the way I wanted. To this day, it's not the holidays if Mom doesn't put the turd-shaped Christ family with the screaming faces out somewhere prominent for all to see. And frankly, I'd be upset if she didn't.

Haha, reminds me of another art class fail of mine. In 3rd grade, we had to paint our family at dinner. The teacher gave me a C and commented that "they all look like robbers". Years later, my mom found the painting and asked me why I had painted the last supper :P

Did your act of honesty involve saying something to the teacher? if so: did you come up to the teacher yourself? or did the teacher ask you something? encourage you to speak?
Did the teacher ask you what your artwork resembled?

Was the teacher speaking specifically to you? To the class as a whole?

Did your teacher make an assumption about what the pottery was supposed to be? Did they say something to do with who the pottery should be given to? What it should be used for?

Was your response to the teacher a statement? A question? Were you correcting something the teacher had said?

Skipping the rest of the questions because it's time for the

********SPOILER********

In 7th or 8th grade, we had to make pottery animals in art class. The teacher gave us back our finished projects and told us our grades. When it was my turn, she said, "That's a nice dog, I'll give you a B." Without thinking, I blurted out that it was actually supposed to be a pig. She replied, "Oh. In that case, I have no choice but to lower your grade to a C."

Thanks for playing, everyone, and congrats on the solve, trebor!

I assume you meant to write a pig, not a "big" (though maybe it was supposed to be a big pig :-))

Speaking of dogs and pigs, I was driving somewhere about five years ago and saw someone walking an animal on a leash. Upon first seeing it, I thought "That dog looks like a pig!". Then when I got closer, I realized that it WAS a pig!

Yep, I meant “pig”, fixed it in the spoiler.

Haha, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone walk a pig on a leash, but I get excited every time I see a cat on a leash - mainly because my own cat has successfully resisted all my attempts to get him to wear his harness and go for a walk
