Addressing the possible FA from Sundowner's latest series of questions... were Conrad and Rufus related to one another (in the familial sense)? involved in some other relationship beyond their professional/political connection?

So, Rufus was suspected of being involved somehow in Lincoln's assassination? and this suspicion resulted indirectly from a favor that Lincoln did for him, that only came to light after Lincoln was dead?

Did the favor involve somehow NOT punishing Rufus for being at war with the Union? like for example not sending him to a prisoner of war camp after he was captured, not prosecuting him for war crimes, etc.?

Did Rufus inherit something from Ike? did he get access to something after Ike's death? did he succeed Ike in some way, like taking Ike's membership in an order, an academy, or so?
Was it the fact that Rufus and Conrad were brothers that linked Rufus and/or Conrad to the people who murdered Ike? Was Conrad still in his official function when Ike was murdered?
Did Conrad do something in order that Rufus could enjoy the benefits of Ike's favor? did he need to confirm, approve, convey, hand over something? in his official function?
Did Conrad have a role in Ike's favor to Rufus becoming publicly known?
Did the trouble Rufus got into result from people believing that he, because of Ike's favor, had had an interest in Ike's death?
Was there "a clock ticking for Rufus", i.e. was there a particular time window for Ike's death, otherwise the favor would not have become effective?

Did Rufus inherit something from Ike? did he get access to something after Ike's death? did he succeed Ike in some way, like taking Ike's membership in an order, an academy, or so? No to all.
Was it the fact that Rufus and Conrad were brothers that linked Rufus and/or Conrad to the people who murdered Ike? No. Was Conrad still in his official function when Ike was murdered? No.
Did Conrad do something in order that Rufus could enjoy the benefits of Ike's favor? Not deliberately, but yes. did he need to confirm, approve, convey, hand over something? None of these. in his official function? What he relevantly did was done during his period of official function, though not as part of it.
Did Conrad have a role in Ike's favor to Rufus becoming publicly known? No.
Did the trouble Rufus got into result from people believing that he, because of Ike's favor, had had an interest in Ike's death? Yope.
Was there "a clock ticking for Rufus", i.e. was there a particular time window for Ike's death, otherwise the favor would not have become effective? If Ike had lived, the favor would have been effective - though given the precise order of events, it might not have been necessary.

Were Ike and Conrad colleagues before Ike became president? party colleagues? colleagues in a government position? colleagues by profession? did Conrad also work as a lawyer? did Ike and Conrad run a business together?
Was Conrad involved in Ike becoming president? was he his running mate? did he publicly support him? was he the elector who cast the decisive vote?
Did people think Ike granted the favor to Rufus only because of his relationship to Conrad and because Rufus was Conrad's brother?

Is the following sequence of events correct?
- Ike and Conrad are party colleagues (thus, Republican or Whig) and hold government positions, Ike on Federation level, Conrad on state level
- Ike is elected President of the US
- The secession starts
- The state Conrad is working for joins the Confederation (though, Conrad has no part in this decision)
- Conrad's brother Rufus becomes a general in the Confederate army
- Ike does Rufus a favor, Rufus learns about this favor through a letter from Ike
- The Confederate army surrenders
- Ike is murdered
- The information about the favor becomes public
- Rufus is accused of being linked to the conspiracy against Ike

Is the following sequence of events correct? An excellent recap, Sundowner. Thanks!
- Ike and Conrad are party colleagues (thus, Republican or Whig This.) and hold government positions, Ike on Federation level, No. Conrad on state level Hint: Why is this step relevant?
- Ike is elected President of the US
- The secession starts
- The state Conrad is working for joins the Confederation (though, Conrad has no part in this decision)
- Conrad's brother Rufus becomes a general in the Confederate army
- <step missing here>
- Ike does Rufus a favor, Yes. Rufus learns about this favor through a letter from Ike No.
- The Confederate army surrenders
- Ike is murdered
- The information about the favor becomes public
- Rufus is accused of being linked to the conspiracy against Ike

All else correct.

So, Ike did something relevant as a politician, but not at the national level and prior to his election as President? for example at the state? or even county level? and this "something" wasn't the favor itself--the latter of which happened after the start of Ike's presidency and of the war?

However, did whatever Ike do previously at a more local level somehow lay the foundation for the later favor? Going on the previous implication of the favor being more like the absence of disfavor/punishment, was Rufus ordinarily barred from some position of power? possibly because of leading an act of rebellion? whereas Ike removed/bypassed this restriction?

Did Ike give Rufus some kind of power? No.

So, Ike did something relevant as a politician, but not at the national level and prior to his election as President? What he did was not specifically political. for example at the state? This. Though, come to think of it, both he and Conrad could be argued to be on a national level as well. It was before his presidency. or even county level? and this "something" wasn't the favor itself Correct. --the latter of which happened after the start of Ike's presidency and of the war? Correct.

However, did whatever Ike do previously at a more local level somehow lay the foundation for the later favor? Yes. Going on the previous implication of the favor being more like the absence of disfavor/punishment, was Rufus ordinarily barred from some position of power? No. possibly because of leading an act of rebellion? Relevant. whereas Ike removed/bypassed this restriction? Yes, for SVV of "restriction."

Did Ike want to give something to Rufus to free himself from trouble?

Did Conrad somehow help Ike in his political carreer? so that later as a president Ike felt he owes something to Conrad and maybe to Rufus?
The missing step before Ike's favor: Was Rufus actively involved in military action against the US Army? did he take part in a battle? capture a town or area of land? attack Washington DC? Was Rufus captured? Did Rufus relevantly avoid to do something? like: avoiding a battle? not taking a town? not taking prisoners?
After Ike's death and the favor becoming public: Did people think Rufus had a personal interest in Ike being murdered? an interest beyond political views?
Did the mentioned letter of Ike reveal the favor to the public? Was it sent to Rufus? to Conrad? to someone else? Was it never sent, but found in Ike's belongings? Was it Ike's will?

Did Ike want to give something to Rufus to free himself from trouble? Not quite, but on the right track.

Did Conrad somehow help Ike in his political career? No. so that later as a president Ike felt he owes something to Conrad and maybe to Rufus? But yes.
The missing step before Ike's favor: Was Rufus actively involved in military action against the US Army? This. did he take part in a battle? This. capture a town or area of land? attack Washington DC? Was Rufus captured? This. Did Rufus relevantly avoid to do something? like: avoiding a battle? not taking a town? not taking prisoners? No to all.
After Ike's death and the favor becoming public: Did people think Rufus had a personal interest in Ike being murdered? This. an interest beyond political views? Irr.
Did the mentioned letter of Ike reveal the favor to the public? Yes. Was it sent to Rufus? to Conrad? to someone else? this. Was it never sent, but found in Ike's belongings? Was it Ike's will? No.

I think all the relevant aspects are revealed now, so...

SPOILER:

Rufus is Confederate General Rufus Barringer.
Conrad is North Carolina Congressman Daniel Barringer, Rufus' brother.
Ike is President Abraham Lincoln.
Murdock is John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assassin.

The steps:

Before the Civil War, Daniel Barringer and Lincoln were in Congress together and became friends.

In 1861, Lincoln became President, and Rufus Barringer joined the Confederate Army.

On April 3, 1865, Rufus was taken prisoner. Lincoln happened to be with the Union army, and met with Rufus. Because of their shared connection with Daniel, Lincoln wrote a letter to the War Department, asking that Rufus' captivity be made easier for him with comforts that would not normally be available to a Prisoner of War.

On April 14, 1865, before this letter reached its destination, Lincoln was assassinated by Booth.

The letter arrived at the height of a witch hunt for the conspirators. Because of Rufus' connection with Lincoln, the government leaped to the conclusion that Rufus had something to do with the conspiracy, and he remained in prison for several months after all the other Confederate troops had been allowed to go home.
