When I was young and people had to write my name, they usually got it wrong, which was a nuisance. A decade later, something happened which made it more annoying. What, and why?

Whenever I had to give my name, people tended to get it wrong. (I don't think 'Pitt' is hard to spell, but there you go). I was even told, on occasion, that I was spelling my own name incorrectly!
Anyway, once Brad came on the scene, I would say, "Pitt, as in "Brad Pitt", and then they would ALWAYS say, "I bet you wish you had his money," and then they would laugh.
