[Sarisberie] Then it became a Thing

Postby Sarisberie2 » Thu Mar 23, 2023 1:27 am

They were in the supermarket. She said something to him, and he kicked off!
The next time they went there, he was a bit grumpy.
The third time, he said, “Oh yes, ha ha, very funny!
What was the thing she said?

Kicked off: became angry? They: a couple? Friends? Relatives? Two people? HA, F+M? Relevant how much time elapsed between the three times they went there? Did she intend for him to: kick off? Be grumpy? Say something was funny? Did he say it was funny in a sincere way? Sarcastic way? When he said “Oh yes, ha ha, very funny!", was he referring to the thing she said the first time they were there? Did she say this thing the second time? Third time? If not, did she do something that reminded him of what she said? Or did going to the supermarket remind him of the thing she said? Did they ever got here without one another? Relevant? Relevant where they were in the supermatker the first time? Second time? Third time? did she say something about him? Herself? Someone else? The supermarket? A product? Money? What they were buying?

Anything to do with express lines?
Is this a normal checkout line, or is it arranged in some unusual way?

Is the car really full? do they have a small car?
Will he unload the car? she? both together? will they both drive home together? Will they unload all the stuff in one place? or drop things at multiple places (like taking home some things for their neighbors)? Order in which things are loaded into the car relevant?
Were all three shopping trips to the same store? did they buy each time more or less the same stuff?
Is their home at an unusual place? (like: a ship? a lighthouse? a mountain hut?) Are there conditions that make unloading difficult?
Is it a long trip from the store home?
Is the weather relevant? Is it raining?
Does she say anything to the effect that he should handle things with care when unloading?
Is her remark refering to different roles or skills of men and women?

When unloading, is there something affecting the car? Such as being parked in an awkward place? Tight place? On an incline? Something affacting the home? Such as relevant stairs? Locks? Doors? Having to walk a long way? Are there conditions making unloading strenuous? Time-consuming? Tedious? Requiring a certain number of people?

OK, I think I used unclear directions then - I meant "at the back" from the perspective of a person retrieving them from the back of the car. So to clarify, I visualize the placement as:

- seat back
- his bags
- her bags
- hatchback door

Is this correct?

And if so, do they arrive at his home first, thus causing difficulty as his bags must be removed first, but hers are in the way because they were placed in the boot second? Are the bags easy to mix up?

Is this correct? All irrel and BUWT. Suffice to say that on any given trip, it wasn't difficult to work out.

And if so, do they arrive at his home first, It varied, irrel thus causing difficulty as his bags must be removed first, but hers are in the way because they were placed in the boot second? irrel Are the bags easy to mix up? Actually, NO. Good Q.

So all three times she said the same comment (or perhaps a slightly paraphrased comment)? telling him to be sure to take the correct one of the bags, and implying he might choose the wrong one by mistake?

Was the difference in his reaction merely due to the repetition (like, at first he was upset at the implication that he might be stupid, but then after it was said enough times, it became an inside joke, hence funny)? or was there a relevant change in the contents of the bags that made the comment have different implications? like for instance, in some cases the bags had something they really wanted (such as ice cream, pizza, etc.), where taking the wrong bag would deprive someone of something, whereas other times the bags had something necessary but hardly fun (such as a toilet plunger/cleaner, pills for a rather embarrassing medical problem, etc.), where being stuck with the wrong bag would feel uncomfortable?

Did she insinuate that he would want to take the wrong bag? That her bag was somehow better than his? Or that taking his own bag reflected poorly on him somehow?

Re: [Sarisberie] Then it became a Thing

Sorry - this puzzle over-ran a bit and then I was out of action. Solution below.

Biograd1 wrote:So all three times she said the same comment (or perhaps a slightly paraphrased comment)? telling him to be sure to take the correct one of the bags, and implying he might choose the wrong one by mistake? YES

Was the difference in his reaction merely due to the repetition (like, at first he was upset at the implication that he might be stupid, but then after it was said enough times, it became an inside joke, hence funny)? Exactly or was there a relevant change in the contents of the bags that made the comment have different implications? like for instance, in some cases the bags had something they really wanted (such as ice cream, pizza, etc.), where taking the wrong bag would deprive someone of something, whereas other times the bags had something necessary but hardly fun (such as a toilet plunger/cleaner, pills for a rather embarrassing medical problem, etc.), where being stuck with the wrong bag would feel uncomfortable? no

SPOILER*************************************************************

The thing she said to him as they were going through the checkout was, "We must be careful not to get the bags mixed up". This really annoyed him, because it was such an obvious thing to say* - they lived in different houses but did their shopping together. Although it annoyed him on future visits, he eventually accepted it in good grace and it became a contest as to who could say it first. To be fair, she did it deliberately because he was so easy to wind up.

* or, "Master of the bleeding obvious", per John Cleese.
